That last statement is incorrect. The pods need to both run out of ammo for their AR and have their supply packs removed before they despawn.
We once had a line of four mixed with operated turrets as a fall back behind the inner doors. Even with the supply packs used to fuel our spear barrage the pods stayed until their internal ammo was all used
