I am not so sure that the turn-based combat mechanic is a significant factor in why BG3 is so liked. I think the story, companionship, and other aspects of gameplay mechanics are the main reasons it is liked. The turn-based combat was simply something people could tolerate because they did do a good job implementing it, and put forth the effort of making it exciting (for a turn-based combat system).

I recall numerous people asking for real-time combat with pause, and there was a lot of disappointment surrounding Larian Studios announcement that they will not implement that type of combat system. I really think the game would have gotten a lot more sales than it did had it added it.

But Larian added modding tools that allow people to implement this functionality themselves. So maybe that was their plan all along? Who knows.
