I can see where you're coming from, even if I don't see it that way. I never gave it much thought if I'm honest.
What I always found disturbing is the artwork of Rydia in Final Fantasy IV. She's supposed to be 4 (to begin with), but the artwork makes her look like she's 17 or so.
