Resonium Choice And Dullahan Fight

The Newborn Dead End Butcher description in Zenless Zone Zero

Dead End Butcher is an Ethereal-type boss that players first encounter in Chapter 1 of the main story, alongside the Cunning Hares. The Newborn Notorious Hunt version retains the original's two weaknesses: Ice and Ether. Nicole, a fantastic free Ether unit, is an excellent choice for this fight as her Core Skill provides 20% (lvl 1) DEF reduction to enemies hit by her enhanced bullets or Energy Fields.

Players can eat Bone Broth Noodles at the Noodle Shop for a 30% DMG and 8% CRIT Rate buff against bosses.

Before the fight starts, players get to pick a Resonium to aid them in the fight. While the best choice is dependent on a player's team, [Assist] Ether Reaction Device is an amazing general option, especially for those with weaker rosters. The increased Anomaly Buildup Rate from Perfect Assists not only allows more frequent Anomaly applications but also makes it easier to execute Anomaly Disorders, which can be a huge source of damage.

Fighting Dullahan in Zenless Zone Zero

After choosing a Resonium, players will first face off against a Dullahan, an Elite enemy with the same two weakness types as the Butcher. Dullahan is a relatively straightforward enemy with long attack wind-up timings, allowing players to easily dodge or parry them. Aside from their normal swing attacks, Dullahan also directs a laser beam at the player after a few seconds of channeling. An indicator will show up near the end of its channel, enabling players to react with a dodge or parry.

Players can use Dullahan to build up Energy and Decibels in preparation for the Butcher.

How To Beat Newborn Dead End Butcher (Phase 1)

Fighting Newborn Dead End Butcher in Zenless Zone Zero

Once Dullahan is dead, Phase 1 of Newborn Dead End Butcher will begin. Butcher's attack patterns in Phase 1 are quite easy to follow and well telegraphed.

  • Upward Swing: Butcher will turn slightly towards its right side to wind up an upwards swing of its weapon.
    • First Variation: The attack starts with the head of the weapon pointed behind Butcher. The swing timer gives players ample time to dodge or parry.
    • Second Variation: The attack starts with Butcher's weapon pointed towards the sky before following through with the same motion and swing timer. The key difference is that Butcher will perform two consecutive swings, both of which will be automatically blocked if the first one is parried.
  • Frontal Smash: Immediately after the second variation of Upward Swing, Butcher will wind back its weapon and raise its left hand in the air. The weapon will start glowing as Butcher makes a giant swing down in front, which also causes an explosion that detonates after a brief moment.
    • Players cannot parry this attack, so they will need to dodge or run out of it.
  • Spinning Attack: Butcher will spin around clockwise with its weapon.
    • The wind-up and swing of this attack is much faster than the first two.
  • Leap Attack: If Butcher is not within melee range of the player, it will flash an indicator before jumping towards them.

How To Beat Newborn Dead End Butcher (Phase 2)

Fighting Newborn Dead End Butcher in Zenless Zone Zero

After depleting Butcher's HP bar, it will start transitioning into Phase 2, losing its weapon and gaining two additional arms. Butcher gains several attacks in its new form, becoming even faster and deadlier.

  • Double Strike: Butcher raises its top two arms to perform two consecutive strikes at the player.
    • It is recommended to parry this to avoid the subsequent strike.
  • Triple Chain Attack: Butcher raises its right arms and leg to perform a chain of three attacks. The first attack involves two to three consecutive strikes, the second has two strikes, and the last one is a single strike.
    • It is highly recommended to save enough Assist Points to parry all three attacks, as dodging may still put players in harms way of the subsequent strikes.
  • Four Arm Slam: Butcher raises all four arms into the air before quickly slamming them down three times, dealing AoE damage around him. After the third slam, an explosion will detonate around him after a brief moment.
    • Players cannot parry this and must dodge or run to avoid it.
  • Laser Beam: Butcher briefly charges energy to shoot towards the player.
    • Players cannot parry this and must dodge or run to the side.
  • Leap Attack: Similar to Phase 1, Butcher will leap towards the player if they are out of its melee range.
    • Unlike Phase 1, players can no longer parry this leap.

- If Agents perish in this battle, they will revive after a few seconds. This is limited to two deaths per battle.

- If the entire team perishes, players can choose to revive the whole team. This is limited to three times per week.

Newborn Dead End Butcher serves as an excellent introductory boss for Zenless Zone Zero's end game. With its well telegraphed attacks, even players new to action RPGs can learn the parry and dodge timings needed to conquer this Notorious Hunt.
