How to Switch Characters in the City in Zenless Zone Zero

The world of Zenless Zone Zero is equal parts peaceful and chaotic, and when something big isn't going down, players can roam around the city all they want, whether as the Phaethon siblings or as the game's playable Agents. The community demanded that players should be able to switch characters, and as of the 1.2 patch, this feature has since come online.

If you've ever wanted to run around New Eridu as someone other than the character you chose at the beginning, you'll now be able to do so at your leisure. It's a novel way of experiencing the game, and if you want to do overworld activities like collecting Mewmew stamps in Blazewood, here's how you can do so.

How to Swap Characters While Exploring in ZZZ

The process itself is pretty simple. Click on the time-of-day display button in the upper-left corner of the screen (press the T key on your keyboard or the touchpad if you're using a DualSense controller), then navigate to the Character Selection menu. From here, you'll be able to switch between Belle, Wise, and other Agents that you've unlocked. Pick who you want to use, then hit the confirm button.

You can change your character at any time and as many times as you want. However, as of writing, the number of selectable Agents is very limited. The only available Agents so far are Caesar, Burnice, and Yanagi. Players can expect future 5-star characters to be selectable for city exploration, but it's currently unknown if any standard banner characters like Soldier 11 or Nicole will become available.

Limitations and Future Content

Your choice of character while exploring New Eridu is purely for cosmetic purposes. Interacting with any NPC will automatically revert you back to the first Phaethon sibling you chose at the beginning of the game, even if you're using the other one for exploration. The game will proceed as if you're still using your original choice. Also, features like the selfie camera won't be available if you're using an Agent, though it's still usable if you're using one of the siblings.

It's unclear if HoYoverse will make all ZZZ characters selectable for city exploration. However, It has been confirmed in October's devstream that an Agent Accompany mode is in the works — this will let players hangout with their favorite characters as they're going about their daily business in New Eridu. This is a separate feature from the usual hangouts that are already in the game, and it will present new interactions with characters in the future.
