Tears of the Kingdom players that happened to have a file of Breath of the Wild are able to transfer their horses from BotW to TotK once they complete the tutorial mode. Having a horse in the beginning stages of TotK will make it much easier going from one place until Link has enough Zonai Materials to create vehicles. However, you may want to leave room in the stable for some of the exclusive horses in Hyrule.

Like its predecessor, Tears of the Kingdom has special horses that can only be found in very specific areas. Instead of two, there are now six that can be added to a stable registry. You will want to spend Pony Points at the stables to increase the amount of horses you can own. After all, some of the unique horses will be worth the effort of taming.

Updated on May 15, 2025 by Renri Seong: Unique horses are a type of horse in Tears of the Kingdom that can only be found and tamed once. If you're looking to fill out the Hyrule Compendium, then you'll want to track down all of them. Tears of the Kingdom brings back the unique horses from Breath of the Wild, but it also adds some new ones. The unique horses are scattered around Hyrule, and like any other horse, you'll have to bring one to the stable to formally register them. The following guide has been updated to include how to find the royal white stallion in Tears of the Kingdom as well as which horses can have their stats enhanced by Malanya, the Horse God.

How To Get A Horse In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Horses are one of the easiest ways of getting around in Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom; here's how to get one.

Stalhorse

Skeleton Horse

stalhorse legend of zelda tears of the kingdom

As their name indicates, Stalhorses are skeletal horses. Despite their intimidating look, these beasts are relatively harmless... Unless a Bokoblin steers them into battle. Stalhorses used to roam the fields at night in Breath of the Wild, but in Tears of the Kingdom, the majority of them have been moved below The Surface of Hyrule. Unfortunately, Stalhorses can't be registered at a stable. However, since Link can't be harmed by the Gloom while on their back, Stalhorses are useful when traversing The Depths.

Stalhorses will appear around Hyrule Field in The Depths at night. One place to check out is -0362, -0268, -0471, which is near the Sinonoyk Lightroot. They tend to travel in groups and stand around in Gloom. Thus, to avoid the effects of Gloom, you will have better luck trying to tame one by dropping in from the sky.

Since Stalhorses can't be registered, they do not have stat measurements.

Spot

Spotting Spot

Spot is an average horse, but he's great to have in the early stages of Tears of the Kingdom. Plus, there isn't any other horse in TotK that has Spot's coloring/design. Most of the horses near Lookout Landing are gentle-natured and 2/3-star average. Spot is unique in that he's part of a side quest called "Spotting Spot," and bringing him back to his owner is how Link can register him to the stables.

You can find Spot around -0332, -0043, 0023, a little southwest from Lookout Landing. Once or if you decide to keep Spot, you'll have the option of renaming him. Stat-wise, Spot has the following:

Giant White Stallion

"Result of a Sudden Mutation"

The Giant White Stallion is unique to Tears of the Kingdom. He's essentially a palette swap of the Giant Horse from Breath of the Wild. Since his spawn is closer to a stable than the Giant Horse in Tears of the Kingdom, he's "easier" to register. You'll need two and a half stamina wheels to tame him less you get thrown off.

The Giant White Stallion can be found where the Horse God's Lake used to be at 0738, -3729, 0080. The closest stable to the Great White Stallion is the Highland Stable at 0534, -3433, 0047. As one of the two giant horses in TotK, he can't sprint, can't be customized, and can't pull carriages. However, his immense Strength means he can take more than a few attacks compared to the average horse.

Giant Horse

Ganondorf's Horse

The Giant Horse's black flank and orange/red mane reminded many BotW players of Ganondorf's steed in Ocarina of Time, but the similarities end there. This horse doesn't seem to be aligned with Ganondorf in this timeline. Unlike the other unique horses, there are two ways of obtaining the Giant Horse: taming it at Hateno Beach (4129, -2453, 0003) or transferring him from a BotW save file.

The Giant Horse isn't hard to miss. He's tall and is always seen surrounded by other horses in the wild. Like the Giant White Stallion, the Giant Horse can't be customized, sprint, or pull carriages. He has the same stats as the white stallion:

Royal White Stallion

Princess Zelda's Horse from BotW

If you played Breath of the Wild, then you're probably familiar with the royal white stallion that you could tame in a side quest. This horse bears an exact resemblance to the same horse Zelda had before the calamity. Much like the Giant Horse, the royal white horse makes a return in Tears of the Kingdom. However, his location has been changed from Breath of the Wild.

Do not confuse the royal white stallion with the great white stallion. Zelda's royal horse is a regular-sized horse that has Stamina/stirrups and can pull carriages.

To get the royal white horse in Tears of the Kingdom, you'll want to search north of Skull Lake in North Akkala. Around (3273, 3727, 0223), you'll find the royal white stallion. The quickest way to reach this area is to warp to the Kamatukis Shrine. Once you've tamed the white stallion, you'll need to ride it back to the closest stable, which happens to be the East Akkala Stable. If you're still having trouble finding the royal white horse, you can refer to the purple objective marker on the above image.

Golden Horse

Zelda's Golden Horse

Along with the royal white stallion, Tears of the Kingdom adds a new horse that once belonged to Princess Zelda. This horse is known as the golden horse, and it's one of the two unique horses to have a Gentle Temperament. It has a weaker Pull and Stamina stat than the royal white stallion, but the golden horse has higher speed. Its Gentle Temperament also ensures it won't throw off Link if he uses up all its stamina wheels.

Players can find the golden horse/Zelda's Horse in the North Tabantha Snowfield around -1792, 2988, 0238, north of Snowfield Stable in the Hebra region. Taming the golden horse is part of a side adventure, so if players want the Froggy Suit from the Lucky Gazette side adventure, they'll end up having to tame this one.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - All Side Quests

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK) has a lot of side quests in it. Here's a breakdown of them all.

Epona

The Horse of Legend

zelda tears of the kingdom register epona stable

Finally, there's Link's signature horse, Epona. Strangely enough, the only way to get Epona in Tears of the Kingdom is by scanning the Smash Bros. 4 Link or the Twilight Princess Link (not Wolf Link) amiibo. Doing so has a high chance of summoning Epona. Once players summon Epona, they'll want to take her to a stable and register her as soon as possible.

Another way you can get Epona is if you have her from a BotW save file. All your horses from BotW will be transferred to your TotK file.

Epona's stats are some of the best in Tears of the Kingdom. She's one that players will want to keep for their playthrough. Like the giant horses, the stable head won't try to style her mane and she can't pull carriages either.

Can You Increase Unique Horse's Stats?

Where is Malanya, the Horse God?

legend of zelda tears of the kingdom malanya spring upgrade horse

Malanya is the Horse God in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. However, he's since changed his location as of Tears of the Kingdom. You'll want to head north of North Akkala Foothill and Bloodleaf Lake to find Malanya Spring. You can also reach Malanya Spring by heading west from the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. The closest Shrine to Malanya Spring is the Jochi-iu Shrine, which is also the Shrine that's closest to the East Akkala Stable.

If you've cooked the right meals and have enough, you can give them to Malanya in exchange for raising one of your horse's stats. However, there are some unique horses that can't have their stats changed.

  • You can increase the stats of the Spotted Horse, Golden Horse, and Royal White Stallion.
  • You cannot increase the stats of the Giant Horse, Giant White Stallion, and Epona.
