After clearing the Great Sky Island and helping Purah on The Surface at Lookout Landing, Tears of the Kingdom players will be urged to go northwest towards Rito Village in Tabantha. Along one of the paths leading to Rito Village, there's a lone cabin with a group of Bokoblins camped right outside.
"Open the Door" is a beginner-tier side quest that involves defeating nearby monsters. Fighting them isn't a challenge in late-game Tears of the Kingdom, but they can easily overwhelm a Link with only four hearts and weak armor. Those that manage to complete the side quest will earn some helpful rewards for newcomers.
Where to Get "Open the Door" Side Quest
Link will want to equip some cold-resistant gear (ex: Snowquill Set from Rito Village) or eat a meal with cold-resistance before doing the side quest. Otherwise, the weather will chip away at his health.
The "Open the Door" side quest is located at coordinates -2683, 1670, 0265. Players will find it on the eastern path from Rito Village and the Lucky Clover Gazette. Another way to reach it is to leave from the Oromuwak Shrine (-3079, 1618, 0243).
The three Bokoblins sitting outside the cabin will notice Link if he approaches directly, so walk along the side of the cliff to reach the other side of the cabin and avoid being detected.
"Open the Door" Walkthrough
To get the side quest, players will need to approach the door of the cabin or the cabin's left wall. Press A-button when in front of the door or the hole in the left wall. The NPCs inside are afraid to leave the cabin while the monsters are still outside. As such, they won't unlock the door until Link has taken care of the Bokoblins.
Defeating three regular Bokoblins isn't difficult, but here are some tips for those that may just be starting out and have weak armor/weapons:
- Method 1: Climb onto the roof from the wall farthest away from the Bokoblin camp. Jump off the roof and quickly hold ZR-button to enter bullet time. Fire an arrow at the Bokoblins' heads for a critical shot.
-
Method 2: Use projectiles like
Fire Fruit
or
Bomb Flowers. If a Bokoblin goes rolling down the nearby cliff, it won't survive, so try to lure them near the edge.
- Method 3: Have Link take attack or defense-enhancing food or elixirs before battling the monsters head on.
"Open the Door" Rewards
Once the monsters have been taken care of, go back to the cabin and try to open the door. The people inside will realize the monsters have been defeated and will allow Link inside. For his help, Link will get two items:
-
Spicy Elixir
(wards off the cold while active)
-
Traveler's Shield
(
Wooden Shield
with base defense of 4)
If Link says he's never heard of Shield Surfacing when asked, Yammo (the girl) will offer Link the nearby Traveler's Shield. While it's not impressive for late-gamers, a wooden shield with a defense of 4 is great for beginners. As a wooden shield, it won't draw lightning during thunderstorms, making it safe to wear in stormy weather as long as no metal is Fused to it.
How to Shield Surf
Shield Surfing can be done by doing the following:
- Hold down ZL-button so that Link holds up his equipped shield.
- While holding ZL, press X-button to jump.
- In the middle of Link's jump, tap the A-button to ride on the Shield.
It won't be possible to Shield Surf if the Equipped Shield is Fused. Also, players will need to know how to Shield Surf to reveal the Zakusu Shrine in the Lanayru Region.
Shield Surfing is good to use in areas with steep slopes. Shield Surfing isn't recommended to use on uneven hills or rocky surfaces as doing so will wear away at the shield's durability. Not only is Shield Surfing good for even slopes, but it can also be used to grind down rail tracks, like the ones on the Sky Islands or near Goron City.
