In Tears of the Kingdom, the materials you obtain from slaying monsters will vary from species to species. For example, there are several types of Lizalfos, but each one drops their own Lizalfos Tails and Lizalfos Horn. If you're looking to upgrade your armor, then you'll likely need higher-tier monster parts, such as the Black Lizalfos Horns and Black Lizalfos Tails. You can find Black Lizalfos on the Surface of Hyrule, but they're rarer than their Green and Blue Lizalfos counterparts.

Where to Find Black Lizalfos

East Necluda, Gerudo Wasteland

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom - Black Lizalfos, Silver Lizalfos

According to the Hyrule Compendium, Black Lizalfos can be found in the Gerudo Wasteland and East Necluda, but you'll want to search very specific locations. Two areas you can check in the Gerudo Wasteland are the Palu Wasteland and the North Gerudo Ruins. Also, despite the Compendium listing East Necluda, you can find Black Lizalfos in the Upland Zorana region, specifically Tabahl Woods. Here's the specific coordinates for three Black Lizalfos spawn areas:

Coordinates

Closest Shrine/Fast-Travel

Palu Wasteland

  • -3082, -2888, 0013
  • Chichim Shrine (-3211, -3007, -0049)

Tabahl Woods

  • 2723, 0234, 0100
  • Maoikes Shrine (2277, 0150, 0079)

North Gerudo Ruins

  • -3741, -2569, 0032
  • Gerudo Town, Soryotanog Shrine (-3883, -2964, 0123)
  • Kara Kara Bazaar, Mayatat Shrine (-3292, -2509, 0024)

If you visit these areas and don't see any Black Lizalfos, then you'll need to make some progress in Tears of the Kingdom's story. This means completing parts of the "Regional Phenomena" main quest, such as "Tulin of Rito Village" and "Sidon of the Zora." The monsters will then "scale" to your progress in-game, enabling you to find rarer monsters.

When you're approaching Lizalfos, you can don the Lizalfos Mask or Majora's Mask. This will prevent them from attacking you, unless there are other monster species nearby (such as the Chuchus).

How Often Do Black Lizalfos Horns Drop?

You're more likely to get Black Lizalfos Horns than you would Black Lizalfos Tails. For every Black Lizalfos you defeat, you should get at least one horn. If not, you can always save before slaying the Black Lizalfos and reload your file if you don't get the monster parts you're trying to farm.

How to Defeat Black Lizalfos

Flurry Rushing

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom - Black Lizalfos in Hyrule Compendium

Lizalfos can be tricky opponents - especially for new players - thanks to their speed and long-range attack. Since you'll be fighting Black Lizalfos, you'll likely know the quickest way to take them down. Otherwise, you're going to want to wear armor with high Defense and have weapons with a strong Attack stat. It also helps to have a powerful Bow and arrows.

The Black Lizalfos has more HP (288) than Green, Blue, Fire/Ice/Electric Lizalfos, but less than Silver Lizalfos. They'll usually have a Fused weapon on hand, which can knock off a few of your hearts if you're not careful.

If you're fighting the Black Lizalfos with melee weapons, you'll want to trigger Flurry Rush. This is when you dodge an enemy's attack at the last second. Doing so will slow down time and allow you to mash the action button (Y-button) to unleash a flurry of attacks. It's ideal for fighting just about any enemy you come across in Tears of the Kingdom.

Another way to defeat Black Lizalfos is to hit them in the head with arrows. Equip a bow with a high Attack stat, and jump off a high ledge with the Black Lizalfos in range. As Link is falling, pull out the bow with ZR-button to slow down time, and aim the arrows for the Lizalfos' head. Headshots deal critical hits and can temporarily stun Link's targets. Fire as many arrows as you can before Link hits the ground. If your weapons are powerful enough, you can take out the Black Lizalfos with just four arrows.

You can also Fuse materials (ex: Shock Fruit) to give your arrows some extra power. Using Shock Fruit can stun the Black Lizalfos and may cause them to drop their weapon.

Where to Use Black Lizalfos Horns

Fusion & Armor Upgrading

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom - Link with Lizalfos Mask

Since Black Lizalfos are rare, you're going to want to save them for upgrading your armor. On the other hand, you can Fuse the Black Lizalfos Horns to melee weapons to give them some extra power. Black Lizalfos Horns have a Fusion Power of 26.

Once you've unlocked the Great Fairy Fountain through the "Serenade to a Great Fairy" side adventure, you can start upgrading armor. Unlike Breath of the Wild, you'll be expected to pay a fee along with whatever materials are required for the armor upgrades. Black Lizalfos Horns are used to upgrade the following armor set(s):
