A Zelda fan has shared what seems like a small error in Dampe's Hut in Ocarina of Time 3D, which shows what looks similar to the Crest of the Sheikah, but it's not quite right. The peculiar Ocarina of Time 3D find has amused but also puzzled players, given the visual disparity between it and the standard iconography players would recognize.
As two incredibly influential games not only in the history of Zelda but in 3D gaming overall, Nintendo saw Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, originally N64 titles, remade for the Nintendo 3DS handheld. The games received a graphical overhaul, along with some quality of life improvements, and the added functionality provided by the extra screen on the handheld console. Improvements in graphics and how many polygons could be displayed on-screen at once meant that Ocarina of Time 3D was able to include more detail than the original, but at least one of these details is a bit off.
Reddit user jeff_indigo took to the site's Zelda subreddits to share their discovery of an odd-looking Sheikah Eye in Dampe's Hut. On the table in Dampe's Hut, a book can be seen with what seems like the Crest of the Sheikah on it, but its design is slightly different. The eye and tear appear extremely similar to the standard version, but the triangle-shaped lashes above the eye are oddly absent. Jeff_indigo wondered if anyone knew why the book had this particular symbol, given its similar - but not identical - qualities.
Zelda Book Is a Repeating Mystery
Zelda fans have expressed curiosity about the presence of the book, but haven't been able to provide any real answers about it. This mystery actually goes back to when the game launched and players first noticed the book, though not necessarily in this location. This prop actually appears in a few places in the Ocarina of Time 3D version, including in Impa's home in Kakariko Village, just outside where the graveyard is. The book can apparently also be found in Castle Town's Potion Shop, as well as the Lakeside Laboratory.
Given the connection between the graveyard and the Lens of Truth, including the Sheikah iconography could be a nod to that. However, it wouldn't explain the absence of the triangles. It's unlikely that it's an oversight, so it seems probable that this variant of the eye is meant to be a separate thing entirely. In any case, though it appears multiple times, there's no further information to be gleaned from the prop or texture itself. Barring Nintendo shedding light on it, chances are it's just a bit of background flare that wasn't meant to be heavily examined.
