Nintendo has confirmed that proper dungeons will return in the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. A new Zelda game is launching on the Nintendo Switch later this week, one that will break from tradition in a big way by having Princess Zelda herself be the main playable character for the first time in the mainline series. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a follow-up of sorts to the 2019 Link’s Awakening remake, which reimagined the 1993 Game Boy classic with a new, toy-like 3D art style.

Echoes of Wisdom looks like it will follow the same blueprint, with Zelda exploring the realm of Hyrule from a top-down perspective on a mission to save Link using the mystical Tri Rod. This magic scepter allows players to summon “echoes” to battle enemies and bind and move objects to solve puzzles in a manner similar to last year’s massively successful Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While Echoes of Wisdom looks to channel elements of the more recent Zelda games, it will also call back to the older titles in the long-running Nintendo series.

This includes allowing Zelda to explore classic-style dungeons, as Nintendo confirmed that this popular feature will return in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom ahead of its release on September 26. In a recent news feature, Nintendo answered many questions about Echoes of Wisdom’s gameplay, with one of the last topics revealing that there will be dungeons in the style of older Zelda entries. Players will have to explore different rooms of these dungeons, defeat enemies, solve puzzles, unlock doors, and challenge bosses, all of which are classic Zelda staples.

Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Will Have Classic-Style Dungeons

Dungeons have been a part of the Legend of Zelda series ever since the 1986 original on the NES, though more recent entries have revamped them as part of a more open-world framework. While this approach has led to great success with Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild, there are still plenty of fans who prefer the older, linear dungeons of entries like A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess.

Developer Grezzo is granting the wish to return to more traditional Zelda dungeons in Echoes of Wisdom, though the introduction of Zelda’s “echo” powers will keep things fresh by giving players more options to solve puzzles and battle enemies. Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom promises to deliver a classic-style adventure with plenty of new tricks for fans of all ages when it finally arrives on the Nintendo Switch later this week.
