Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Has Started Leaking Online

Some additional gameplay has emerged online in mid-September 2024, having originated on 4chan. The video, which shows someone launching and running Echoes of Wisdom on a jailbroken Nintendo Switch, was promptly reuploaded on YouTube and began circulating on other social media platforms. Its oldest YouTube mirror has been live for over six hours as of this writing, circa 5pm ET on September 14. Although the leaked video doesn't show much, fans will want to be wary of spoilers regardless, because its sole existence suggests that even more leaks could be on the horizon.

This turn of events is far from unprecedented, as first-party Nintendo titles have a long history of leaking ahead of release. One of the most high-profile recent examples of this trend was the case of pirates getting their hands on Tears of the Kingdom ten days before the game hit the store shelves on May 12, 2023. The Tears of the Kingdom leak prompted a strong response from Nintendo, with the company subsequently cracking down on the Yuzu emulator and accusing it of facilitating piracy. The app was shut down shortly thereafter, together with the 3DS emulator Citra, which was created by the same developers. Yuzu maker Tropic Haze agreed to pay $2.4 million in damages to Nintendo due to the ordeal.

Echoes of Wisdom has so far managed to avoid leaks of this magnitude. But seeing how at least one person has already gotten their hands on a copy of the game and seems to have little qualms about sharing unsanctioned gameplay footage, it might not be long before a bigger portion of Echoes of Wisdom emerges online. Nintendo games have also historically been prone to having their retail copies appearing in the wild too early. That said, the raw gameplay footage of Echoes of Wisdom that surfaced in mid-September likely didn't originate from a retail copy because the hacked Switch shown in the video was seemingly running a digital version of the game.

Speaking of which, Echoes of Wisdom will be approximately 6GB in size, with Nintendo itself confirming as much back in late June, shortly following the game's official announcement. Historical precedent suggests that the Japanese company might also have a day-one patch ready for the game.
