A creative Yu-Gi-Oh fan recently showed off their impressive cosplay of main character Yugi Muto, complete with a working holographic Duel Disk. Over 25 years after it was first created by the late Kazuki Takahashi, Yu-Gi-Oh has retained a dedicated fanbase in all its forms, from the manga and anime adaptations to the trading card game and subsequent video game entries.
For most of the franchise’s existence, Yu-Gi-Oh has been centered around the Duel Monsters card game (or “Monsters and Wizards,” as it was first called in the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga), which has players summon powerful monsters to perform helpful magic spells or unleash clever traps on unsuspecting opponents. This is primarily done through the Duel Disk, a wrist-mounted device that conjures realistic holograms to recreate the exciting monster battles that play out during a duel.
Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel Announces New Selection Pack for July 2024
Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel reveals a brand-new Selection Pack planned to be added to the digital trading card game at the end of July.
While an actual working Duel Disk may remain in the realm of fiction for the time being, a talented cosplayer by the name of heyitsmomokun has created the next best thing as a part of their impressive Yugi Muto outfit. Themed after Yami Yugi’s appearance in the original Yu-Gi-Oh series, this cosplay features everything one would expect from the King of Games - an impressive wig recreating Yugi’s iconic star-shaped hairstyle, his signature dark blue school uniform, and a replica of the ancient Millennium Puzzle that houses the spirit of the Egyptian pharaoh guiding the series' young hero.
Impressive Yu-Gi-Oh Cosplay Has Real-Life Duel Disk
The most striking part of this amazing Yu-Gi-Oh cosplay is the replica Duel Disk mounted on heyitsmomokun’s right arm. Attached to the side is a spinning array of lights that, when activated, can project images similar to the ones seen in the various Yu-Gi-Oh adaptations. In one Instagram clip, heyitsmomokun uses this to “summon” what appears to be the Dark Magician Girl, while in another clip shared by a_charaaaa, the prop displays the unstoppable Exodia, the Forbidden One.
Fans have been trying to recreate the holographic visuals of Yu-Gi-Oh’s card duels using augmented reality, and Konami itself demoed a VR experience that brought players face-to-face with legendary monsters like the Blue-Eyes White Dragon during the 25th anniversary Yu-Gi-Oh event in Tokyo earlier this year. In the meantime, heyitsmomokun has managed to create a functioning, holographic Duel Disk of their own.
The Yu-Gi-Oh! Series is a massive franchise that stretches across a wide array of mediums including Manga, animated series, trading cards, and video games. The original release followed the story of protagonist Yugi Moto as he used powerful cards to battle against his foes. Yu-Gi-Oh! Has since been through multiple series and spinoffs that introduce new characters and monsters to the franchise.
