In 2001, WWE owner Vince McMahon attempted to launch a rival football league to the NFL that he dubbed the XFL. The XFL proved to be a failed experiment, with the league only running for one season. Fast forward to 2020, and Vince McMahon attempted to revive the XFL, and for the most part, it was well-received by football fans looking for something to watch in-between NFL seasons. Despite this, it appears the new version of the XFL is even more ill-fated that the original, as it has suspended operations before it was even able to finish its first season.
This was announced by SportsCenter on Twitter. Almost all of the XFL staff have been laid off, and the league reportedly has no intention on running another season in 2021. Previously, the plan was for the XFL to return with a new season next year, as the 2020 season was interrupted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The XFL has reportedly retained some of its top executives, so it could be that there are plans to revive the league at some point in the future. However, it seems as though the XFL is effectively done for the time being, and so football fans shouldn't count on any additional seasons at this time.
The XFL itself has yet to release a statement on the matter, but things should get cleared up when it does.
