XCOM 2, Firaxis Games’ 2016 turn-based strategy game, is currently available on Steam for an enormous 95% discount. This limited-time deal brings XCOM 2 down to its lowest-ever price and can be grabbed for just $2.99 - a bargain for the game with “Very Positive” reviews on Steam.

XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the title that rebooted the franchise after a period of hiatus. It was released to critical acclaim, with few other turn-based strategy games unable to compete with its level of depth and sense of peril it creates in every mission. Eight years after its initial launch, it remains one of the best turn-based strategy games on the market, with a dedicated modding scene contributing massively to its ongoing popularity despite no new mainline title in the series since. Even games that attempt to emulate the formula just can't quite capture the kind of magic that XCOM 2 creates.

Any gamer who has been considering grabbing the game can now pick up XCOM 2 on Steam for just $2.99. This is a massive 95% discount in total, matching its historical low on the platform. Considering XCOM 2 has “Very Positive” reviews on Steam, it is clearly a title gamers remain happy with, which makes picking up one of the most influential sci-fi games ever a no-brainer at just $2.99. Interestingly, the game does have several DLC packs, although the complete XCOM 2 Collection is still priced at $56.95, so it’s not quite as steep a discount when compared to just the base game.

This awesome XCOM 2 deal won’t last forever. It is currently slated to expire on August 15, meaning gamers don’t have to pick up the latest game in the XCOM series. Potential players shouldn’t be fooled by its age - it’s still one of the best strategy games with permadeath out there, and it’s one of the unique titles that anyone can enjoy, regardless of their previous experience with the genre.

Given the success of XCOM 2, it’s a surprise that Firaxis Games is yet to produce a full sequel. There were just four years between it and XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but the wait here now extends to eight, with spin-off XCOM: Chimera Squad released in between. Right now, gamers are turning to XCOM 2 mods for a fresh experience in the game, although this definitely can't go on forever. Firaxis Games hasn't even mentioned any plans for a future title in the series, leaving fans in XCOM limbo at the moment.
