Summary

  • Xbox has the edge over PlayStation in terms of exclusive game releases for 2024, especially after the recent FTC leak suggesting new titles like Indiana Jones and an Oblivion remaster.
  • PlayStation's 2024 lineup is somewhat lacking compared to Xbox, with only a few standout titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Rise of the Ronin at the moment.
  • Both Xbox and PlayStation have undisclosed games without fixed release dates, but Xbox's lineup for 2024 appears stronger overall.

As 2024 approaches, gamers can collectively start looking ahead to what the new year will bring in terms of new game releases. With Xbox and PlayStation almost always going head-to-head for AAA releases, the conversation around which is better typically comes down to what exclusive titles each console has. In the end, it's all about the player's preference and what games they want to play, but right now PlayStation's 2024 lineup isn't quite as good as that of Xbox.

An important piece of context is Xbox parent company Microsoft's ongoing attempt at acquiring Activision. While it's impossible to ascertain what exactly is happening between the two console makers, gamers are keeping a close eye on the standoff between them over Activision's Call of Duty and both companies are likely playing their cards very close to their chests for the sake of public opinion.

The recent FTC leak revealed that Xbox has a few tricks up its sleeve for the coming years, including some mysterious codenamed projects. Sony may well be sitting on a decent stack of interesting titles, but if it is, it's a closely guarded secret. For now, there are some interesting known 2024 titles from both companies, but Xbox has the edge in terms of numbers, especially after the FTC leak which suggests that Indiana Jones and an Oblivion remaster could be coming out in 2024.

PlayStation currently has some big-hitting titles lined up for 2024 like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin. Other titles like road trip survival game Pacific Drive, squad-based shooter Helldivers 2, and possibly Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine pad out the release schedule a little, but not by much. Otherwise, Splatoon- like Foamstars was recently announced at the September 2023 State of Play for an early 2024 release.

There are several games for each console that don't have fixed release dates. Good examples for PlayStation are Death Stranding 2 and Silent Hill 2, but these might not arrive for another year or two. It is almost certain that Sony has a few more exclusives lined up for 2024, but for now it is looking a little thin compared to Xbox. Xbox has a fairly robust showing for 2024 so far, including titles like Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Obsidian's Avowed, and an interesting dark modern folktale-based game set in the American Deep South called South of Midnight are all titles that will be exclusive to Xbox platforms.

Xbox Could Have A Bigger 2024 Than Expected

Like with PlayStation, there are some other Xbox games worth mentioning that don't have a fixed release date as yet. Rare's upcoming action-adventure Everwild is targeting a 2024 release, but this has not been confirmed. Steampunk RPG Clockwork Revolution from inXile Entertainment is also worth mentioning, but cannot be confirmed for 2024 either. State of Decay 3 was announced in 2020 and could also be released sometime in 2024, but could just as easily arrive in 2025.

The recent leaks also revealed that there is a new Doom game in development, and while it doesn't seem like it would arrive until after Indiana Jones and Oblivion's remaster , the possibility that it arrives in mid to late 2024 can't be ruled out until more information is clarified. There is also the new Fable game that is being developed by Playground Games. Fable seems unlikely for 2024, but it's hard to say for certain what Xbox has planned.

As things currently stand, Xbox is looking stronger than PlayStation for 2024 in terms of exclusive games. This can easily change in the coming months as The Game Awards 2023 is still coming up, and usually there are some exciting announcements at this perennial event. There will also likely be some more announcements in the early months of 2024 from both companies. With all that said, there are also some great new games coming to both platforms such as Alone in the Dark, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and Tekken 8.
