Microsoft recently unveiled its next-generation console, the Xbox Series X (or just "Xbox," according to Microsoft), which has a new computer tower-like design and is aiming for release next holiday season. However, there's still a lot we don't know about the Xbox Series X, including its exact release date, price, launch titles, and more. While some expect the Xbox Series X to be properly revealed at E3 2020, as it turns out, Microsoft may plan on showcasing its next-generation console a little earlier on than that, and it will be alongside From Software's Elden Ring.
According to Shpeshal Ed on the XboxEra Podcast, the Xbox Series X reveal event will take place in either April or May of this year. Presumably, this event will give fans their first look at gameplay running on the Xbox Series X, and perhaps even release date and pricing information. As for what games will be shown running on the Xbox Series X, maybe Elden Ring will be one since it will apparently be showcased alongside the new system.
Elden Ring was previously revealed at Microsoft's E3 2019 press conference, so it makes sense that the game would once again be shown off at a Microsoft event. And if it is set to be featured at the Xbox Series X reveal event, it seems as though Elden Ring will be a cross-generational title, as it's already been confirmed for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Alternatively, Elden Ring may drop current-generation platforms and focus on next-gen. No gameplay of Elden Ring has even been shown at this point, so it's hard to say either way.
All we know about Elden Ring is that it's a third-person action RPG set in an open world, and that it will likely have a lot of similarities with the From Software's Dark Souls franchise. We also know that the game is being developed in collaboration with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, so it will be exciting to see what he and Hidetaka Miyazaki can come up with.
From Software is coming off a Game Awards 2019 victory where Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice won Game of the Year, so all eyes will be on the studio's next project. Showcasing it during the Xbox Series X reveal event could elevate Elden Ring's status in the mainstream, but fans will have to wait a few months to find out if there's any truth to Spheshal Ed's claims.
