There are few gaming franchises as widespread and lengthy as Kingdom Hearts. Leading up the release of Kingdom Hearts 3, Square Enix re-released many of the games in the series via compilations. This simplified things for newcomers and allowed longtime fans to replay their favorite titles as a refresher. According to a recent leak, one of those compilations might be coming to Xbox Game Pass soon.
This information comes from Twitter user Wario64, who posted a screenshot of the Xbox Game Pass website that features Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Chapter Prologue as part of the lineup. However, he has posted an update, saying the game no longer appears on the page. Since there has been no official announcement on the matter, there's no way to verify this information as completely accurate, but details on Kingdom Hearts and other additions to the Xbox Game Pass library could be announced early next week.
In February, Kingdom Hearts 3 was added to Xbox Game Pass, but anyone who hasn't played the previous titles will be utterly lost upon diving in. If Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Chapter Prologue does come to Xbox Game Pass, it would offer members an opportunity to fill in some of the gaps in the story leading up the latest entry. The compilation packages together Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD, Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover, and Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep.
As mentioned before, the Kingdom Hearts series is an unusual one. Over the course of 17 years, the story spanned several titles and gaming systems. The mixing of Disney and Square Enix characters with other original creations spawned a wholly unique series that has garnered quite a following. Not a lot of games can do what the series has done and there are plenty of weird things Kingdom Hearts has gotten away with.
As for what's happening now with the series, a mobile title called Dark Road is currently in development, accessible on the same app as Kingdom Hearts Union X[Cross]. It will delve a bit more into the history and motivations of the series antagonist, Xehonort. Unfortunately, Dark Road has been delayed due to the pandemic. Kingdom Hearts 3 saw a major DLC release in January called Re Mind. It retreads some ground but also offers an opportunity for players to dive deeper into the game's supporting characters, exploring their relationships and backstories. There is also a Kingdom Hearts TV series rumored to be in the works for Disney+.
