Summary

  • Xbox Game Pass is losing five titles later today, May 31.
  • The upcoming departures include popular Pokemon-like RPG Cassette Beasts, as well as Remnant 2 and Humanity.
  • May 2025 has been a big net positive for Xbox Game Pass, with 17 new releases offsetting its 10 monthly removals.

Xbox Game Pass is losing five titles later today, including the widely beloved Pokemon-like game Cassette Beasts. While these departures will push the May 2025 Xbox Game Pass removals into double digits, this month has still been an overall net positive for the service by an uncharacteristically large margin.

For years, the XGP catalog has followed a fairly consistent schedule when it comes to departures, removing titles every other week. This most recently happened on May 15, when Xbox Game Pass lost five games: Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Chants of Sennaar, Hauntii, The Big Con, and Dune: Spice Wars.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Adds Day-One Game From Famous Japanese Designer

The 60th new title to join the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library in 2025 is a charming day-one game from a famous Japanese designer.

The May 31 wave of departures matches its mid-month predecessor in size, at least from a platform-agnostic standpoint. Xbox Game Pass is technically only removing four titles today, while PC Game Pass will lose one additional game. The multi-platform departures are Remnant 2, Cassette Beasts, Humanity, and Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer. The PC-only removal is Firework, a 2021 indie mystery centered on a cold case involving a grisly massacre in a Chinese village.

PC users partial to indie horror games still have enough time to experience Firework via their subscription, even if they have yet to start it. According to crowdsourced data from HowLongToBeat, a single playthrough of Shiying Studio’s title takes approximately four hours. That’s roughly the same amount of time needed to rush through Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengeance of the Slayer, although the wordily named boomer shooter generally takes longer to complete on average. As always, this May 31 batch of outgoing games is expected to leave the subscription service around midnight, local time.

May 2025 Has Been a Big Net Positive for Xbox Game Pass Library

Following these departures, Xbox Game Pass will have removed a total of 10 titles in May 2025. However, the month still represents the service’s largest net gain since the start of the year, with 17 new releases offsetting the removals. The most recent of these Xbox Game Pass additions were Metaphor: ReFantazio and Spray Paint Simulator, both of which joined its catalog on May 29. For context, April 2025 saw no net change in the size of the Xbox Game Pass library. In March, the service lost nine more titles than it added, and in February, eight more. January saw 13 additions and 12 removals.

Looking ahead, the service is next gearing up for a dual-release on June 3, when both Symphonia and Crypt Custodian are coming to all non-Core tiers. That's also the date when Microsoft is expected to officially announce its Xbox Game Pass Wave 1 lineup for June 2025. The roster is already known to include Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Master Crafted Edition (June 10) and The Alters (June 13). Historical trends suggest that FBC: Firebreak and Lost in Random: The Eternal Die may also end up getting classified as part of the Wave 1 lineup, even though they're technically slated to debut in the second half of June, on the 17th.
