Summary

  • Xbox Game Pass now includes Dredge, winner of awards and well received by players.
  • While the Dredge base game is or was free on various platforms, there are also three DLC worth checking out.
  • Recent months have brought many exciting additions to Xbox Game Pass.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers of all tiers can now play Black Salt Games’ award-winning horror RPG, Dredge. Currently sporting a “Mostly Positive” review rating on Steam and an 82 average score on OpenCritic, Dredge is just one of many well-received titles joining the lineup on Xbox Game Pass recently.

March, April, and May have been incredible months for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, with numerous exciting games added to the service in a relatively short period of time. Members have been faced with the excruciating decision of which new addition to play first, particularly in the case of gaming’s latest Barbenheimer moment — the shadow drop of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered just days before likely Game of the Year candidate Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Xbox Game Pass’ Standard members haven’t been forgotten either, and subscribers of all tiers now have access to Dredge. Released in March 2023, the fishing-themed RPG immediately grabbed the attention of gamers who love a bit of Lovecraftian horror and was soon nominated for numerous awards, including Best Design, Best Indie, and Best Game Writing. And as of April 2024, Black Salt Games is even working on a live-action film adaptation of Dredge with production company Story Kitchen, whose co-founder was the producer of 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

With an eye-catching visual style and a compelling gameplay loop, Dredge is a single-player experience whose protagonist is a fisherman just out to make a living. He ventures out to find fish and salvage, sells his catch, and upgrades his boat while also getting to know the local inhabitants and listening to their stories. Out on the water, though, things are not all dandy, as the fisherman begins to notice sea monsters, ghost ships, and other strange happenings.

While Black Salt’s title coming to Xbox Game Pass is exciting, many people may already have access to or own a copy. In 2024, Dredge was added to the PS Plus Extra catalog and was also given away by both Epic Games Store and Amazon Prime Gaming. However, all of these free versions, including the Xbox Game Pass offering, are only for the base game. Dredge has three DLC — Blackstone Key, The Pale Reach, and The Iron Rig — which add a new biome, stories, gear, fish, and other goodies, and are well worth a separate purchase.

Xbox Game Pass has plenty of additions planned for May, including Revenge of the Savage Planet on the 8th and DOOM: The Dark Ages on the 16th. Microsoft also recently confirmed another day-one title coming to Xbox Game Pass in May, Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo, an indie adventure game that lets players explore a Latin American version of the afterlife.
