Summary

  • Microsoft introduced a Deadpool controller in red, matching the hero’s outfit, with a special design on the back.
  • Xbox has experimented with various controller designs in the past.
  • Special edition controllers include a pizza-scented TMNT controller, a fur-covered Sonic controller, and a 100% chocolate Xbox controller.

Microsoft has unveiled its new Deadpool-themed controller that comes just in time for the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The controller is red like Deadpool’s outfit and features a cheeky surprise on the back. It may be a bizarre design, but it is far from the only time Microsft has decided to be experimental when it comes to its Xbox controllers.

Looking back at the history of Xbox controllers, it becomes evident that Microsoft is willing to try anything at least once when it comes to controller designs. This is a plus for gamers, as it has led to the creation of Xbox Design Lab which lets players unleash their imagination on a controller.

The History of Xbox Controller Designs

The first Xbox controller is aptly labeled the Xbox Controller. Nicknamed “the Duke”, the wired device is large and clunky, which led to it not being well-received. Things changed with the Xbox Controller S which is designed for players with smaller hands. The trend of having smaller controllers continued with the Xbox 360 and all subsequent gaming generations.

Today, the Xbox Series X/S Wireless Controller can be easily identified by its asymmetrical button layout and its use of AA batteries. For players hoping to splurge, the Elite Controller is available, which features interchangeable back pedal buttons. One of the things Microsoft has focused on with the Xbox Series X/S Wireless Controller is customizability, which has led to a host of fantastic designs.

Xbox Design Lab

For players who love to personalize their favorite gadgets, there is the Xbox Design Lab. This is a customization program first revealed in 2016, and it allows players to fine-tune their controller’s appearance. Players can customize parts like:

  • Body (faceplate)
  • Back
  • Bumpers
  • Triggers
  • D-pad
  • Thumbsticks
  • A, B, X, and Y buttons
  • Share, View, and Menu buttons

The Wacky History of Special Edition Xbox Controllers

Over the years, there has been a slew of special edition Xbox controllers released. Most of them tie into a trending piece of media. For instance, in 2023, to celebrate the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Microsoft released a pizza-scented controller. There are four variations of the controller — one for every ninja turtle — and they contain what Microsoft describes as a “built-in scent diffuser shaped like a slice of delicious New York ‘za.” It’s one not to be missed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans, but it’s unclear how appealing the smell of pizza is during gameplay.

For another outlandish design from Microsoft, the company also produced the Sonic the Hedgehog Xbox controllers. Released to tie in with the premiere of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, the controllers are covered in faux fur and come in blue and red for Sonic and Knuckles, respectively. The special edition controllers were limited edition and a recipient has popped up on Reddit attempting to find out the value of the furry controllers.

The Edible Xbox Series X/S Controller

Perhaps the biggest standout among special edition Xbox controllers comes with the Wonka-inspired Xbox Series X/S console. Unveiled in 2023, the console looks like a chocolate bar, though it is not edible. The controller, on the other hand, is. It is made out of 100% pure chocolate and wrapped in the signature Willy Wonka gold wrapper.

It’s certainly not the last that players have seen of Xbox’s wacky controller designs, and the company is sure to continue to defy expectations. With the customization options available, players don’t have to wait for Microsoft to design something special as the Xbox Design Lab allows them to create their own unique controller.
