Summary

  • Xbox is revoking free access to Alan Wake Remastered.
  • Alan Wake Remastered was accidentally given away for free back in January.
  • The loophole was closed fast, but users were able to retain access to it until now.

Unfortunately for Xbox gamers, the platform is revoking access to the version of Alan Wake Remastered that was accidentally given away for free. Every once in a while, Xbox and other digital gaming storefronts accidentally give games away for free. This happens very rarely, but it is an issue that's popped up on more than one occasion.

Typically when this happens, access to the accidental freebie is revoked pretty quickly. But that wasn't the case for Alan Wake Remastered. In January, Xbox gamers were able to play a free trial of Alan Wake 2. Since this free trial coincided with a special promotion that bundled Alan Wake Remastered and Alan Wake 2 together, the free trial allowed players to claim the full version of the former completely free of charge. Microsoft quickly closed the loophole, but gamers that took advantage of the oversight were able to retain access to Alan Wake Remastered. That is, until now.

According to various posts on social media, Microsoft has started revoking access for Xbox gamers that claimed Alan Wake Remastered for free. The message sent to players explains that they were not supposed to be able to get the game for free, and so access is being revoked. While this is disappointing considering how long gamers were able to keep the game from the day of the glitch, at least there was plenty of time to beat it. The Alan Wake games aren't particularly long, after all.

Xbox Removing Access to Free Copies of Alan Wake Remastered

Those interested in keeping Alan Wake Remastered in their digital libraries will need to fork out $29.99. It may be worth it for those that never played the original, especially since Alan Wake Remastered comes with various enhancements, including 4K resolution graphics. Not only that, but the remastered version of the game comes with the two expansions baked in. There's always a chance Alan Wake Remastered will get added to Xbox Game Pass at some point down the road as well, or will get heavily discounted as part of one of Microsoft's many Xbox sales it holds throughout the year, for those that can stand to wait.

There was a giant gap between the first and second games in the series, but the Alan Wake franchise is alive and well in 2025. Alan Wake 2 is finally profitable, and Remedy Entertainment is continuing to expand the universe with its various projects.
