In one of the most infamous matches in the history of the WWE, one that still has fans scratching their heads whether it was scripted or not, the Montreal Screwjob cemented itself with an ugly legacy as one of Canada's most beloved superstars, Bret Hart, lost his WWE Championship in extremely controversial fashion. Hart's reaction has the wrestling community to this day contemplating that he did not know this would be the result of the match, especially since he spat on the chairperson of WWE, Vince McMahon, and promptly left the company.
In the latest release from 2K Sports and WWE, WWE 2K24, the reintroduction of the popular Special Guest Referee Match has opened the door for players to reimagine the incident from Survivor Series of 1997 as a match official themselves. For wrestling fans wanting to recreate the Screwjob in a match of their own, this guide will explain how it is done.
WWE 2K24: Special Guest Referee Match Guide
Special Guest Referee Matches make their long-awaited return in WWE 2K24. Here's everything you need to know about being a wrestling official.
How to Perform a Screwjob in WWE 2K24
To perform a screwjob, you need to hold down the X/A button while a submission attempt is being made during a Special Guest Referee Match. This action can only be performed by the referee of the match, as it is under their discretion that a match be stopped. Before you can do this, however, you will need to show some favoritism towards the attacking superstar, which you can do in a number of ways:
- By attacking the opposing wrestler.
- By favoring the attacking wrestler with actions such as count outs and fast pinfalls.
- By continuously arguing with the opposing wrestler by pressing the up button on the D-pad.
As this action replicates the infamous moment that Shawn Michaels defeated Bret Hart via submission, despite Hart not tapping out, this action will only be available when a submission attempt is made and not a pinfall or disqualification.
What Happens When You Perform a Screwjob?
As performing a Screwjob requires the referee advising the officials that the match is over, this will result in the attacking wrestler picking up the victory. However, given the controversial fashion that they won in, this will not be received well by the crowd, who will respond with a passionate chorus of booing.
Not only that, but since this is intentional tampering of a match result, your approval score for your officiating duties will be completely wiped out. With that said, performing a Screwjob is not something you will want to do if you are trying to be a fair referee, so, ultimately, there aren't any consequences of performing the action.
