In World of Warcraft: The War Within, players are taken to Khaz Algar, the home of the Earthen. This race has been mentioned a lot in WoW's history, but until now, we've never seen an actual Earthen in the flesh – or, rather, in the stone.
WoW: The War Within - Complete Herbalism Guide
Herbalists will have plenty of new flora to gather as they explore Khaz Algar in World of Warcraft: The War Within.
The Earthen are not just new allies in The War Within, though, they are also the newest Allied Race that players can recruit and play as. To unlock the Earthen race, WoW TWW players need to complete some basic prerequisites including the main campaign, but not all of these requirements are in the game yet.
How To Unlock Earthen in TWW
Unlocking the Earthen race is relatively simple in The War Within. To unlock the "Allied Races: Earthen" achievement, you must simply complete the main War Within storyline, including both the main level-up campaign and the max-level campaign, as well as a series of quests in max-level zones.
On the Allied Races achievement, these quests are grouped into the "Mourning Rise" quests in the Isle of Dorn, the "Broken Tools" quests in The Ringing Deeps, and the "Merrix and Steelvein" quests in the expansion's main city hub, Dornogal.
- "Mourning Rise" begins with the quest "Before I Depart" in the Isle of Dorn
- "Broken Tools" begins with the quest "Discarded and Broken" in The Ringing Deeps
- The "Merrix and Steelvein" quests begin with "How Scandalous!" In Dornogal
These quests will only appear once the main campaign for The War Within is complete. However, Blizzard has time-gated the Earthen race and the second half of the max-level campaign, so even if you complete all of these Earthen race prerequisites, you will not be able to create a new Earthen character until September 3. Once created, Earthen characters can choose to join either the Alliance or the Horde.
Nowadays, there are a lot of cross-faction features, so choosing either Alliance or Horde pretty much just determines the flavor of your leveling experience, as it were.

All Earthen Classes
In total, Earthen characters have nine (out of the total thirteen) Classes to choose from. Earthen cannot become Evokers, because this class is specifically tied to the Dracthyr race, but they also are locked out from becoming Death Knights, Demon Hunters, or Druids.

Here is a guide on everything players need to know about Warband Banks, a new account-wide feature introduced in WoW: The War Within Pre-Patch.
Druidisim in WoW is typically taught by other Druid masters, while they couldn't possibly have become Death Knights or Demon Hunters because the Earthen have been hidden until now – Arthas and Illidan may not have even known they existed.
This leaves the Hunter, Mage, Monk, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior classes up for grabs. Of these nine TWW class choices, the Tanking classes will likely be the go-to for Earthen thanks to the enhanced Armor racial ability, but these bonuses are so minor that they won't lag behind in other specs, too.
Earthen Mount & Heritage Armor
Upon unlocking the Earthen Race, WoW TWW players will also get the Slatestone Ramolith mount. This is a non-flying ground mount that can be used by any race, despite being an Earthen mount, and takes the form of a stony, mossy Ram with elaborate curved horns and a color palette that reflects Khaz Algar's surface.
When you reach Level 50 on an Earthen character, you will unlock the unique Heritage of the Earthen armor set, a gorgeous gem-studded plate armor set that reflects the Earthen zone aesthetics. Like other Heritage Armor sets, the Heritage of the Earthen set can only be used by Earthen characters, and other races will not even see this set pop up in their Transmog list.
