In WoW SoD Phase Two, the Gnomeregan Raid is both very different and very similar to the original version of dungeon in vanilla WoW. The bosses may be completely revamped, new electrified gates may block passage to certain areas, and new strategies have to be used, but some things still feel familiar – like the Grime-Encrusted items that can drop from various enemies in the Raid.

WoW Season of Discovery: All Gnomeregan Quests

Gnomeregan is a max-level Raid in the Season of Discovery, but that doesn't mean WoW SoD players can't still pick up a plethora of quests.

The Grime Encrusted Ring, specifically, is an item that triggers a short quest chain. The Grime Encrusted Ring SoD quest is scaled for Level 40 players, but still requires the same materials to complete as the original version. This walkthrough covers all quests in the Grime Encrusted Ring questline and how to get a Grime Encrusted Ring in the first place.

How To Get A Grime Encrusted Ring

WoW Season of Discovery Grime Encrusted Ring Quest Dark Iron Dwarf Drop

To get a Grime-Encrusted Ring, you'll first have to go into the revamped Gnomeregan. Just like in vanilla WoW, Grime-Encrusted items can only found in Gnomeregan in the Season of Discovery. But now instead of being an about-level-30 dungeon, you'll need to form up with a well-organized 10-man Raid when you reach Level 40.

There are three types of Grime-Encrusted items in SoD: the Grime-Encrusted Object, Grime-Encrusted Salvage, and Grime-Encrusted Ring. Objects drop from just about every trash mob in Gnomeregan, while Salvage is a rarer SoD-exclusive item that begins the Gnomeregan crafting quest chain.

World of Warcraft Classic (including HC and SoD) can be played on the Steam Deck via a simple process of getting Battlenet and Curseforge working.

The Grime-Encrusted Ring is more exclusive. It only drops from Dark Iron enemies within Gnomeregan, who are only themselves found more than halfway through the Raid. Though it's not a guaranteed drop, it shouldn't take any more than two or three runs through Gnomeregan for the item to drop. Just be sure to check every dead Dwarf for personal loot along the way.

Grime Encrusted Ring Quest Walkthrough

Step One: Clean The Ring At The Sparklematic 5200 inside Gnomeregan

Once the Grime-Encrusted Ring has dropped, right-click on it to begin the Grime Encrusted Ring quest. To begin, you'll have to clean off the Grime, which can be done with the Sparklematic 5200 – conveniently located inside the Clean Zone of Gnomeregan. To get into the Clean Zone you'll have to defeat Grubbis, the first Gnomeregan boss.

Interact with the Sparklematic 5200, deposit some silver to clean it off, and the machine will spit back out a wrapped present. Open it to get the Brilliant Gold Ring, and continue the Grime Encrusted Ring SoD quest line.

WoW SoD Best Tanking Classes
WoW Season of Discovery: Best Tank Classes in SoD, Ranked

When it comes to the best Tank classes WoW SoD players have a lot of choices, including three new classes that couldn't Tank in WoW Classic before.

Step Two: Pick Up The Return Of The Ring SoD Quest in Orgrimmar or Ironforge

After getting the Brilliant Gold Ring and beginning the Return of the Ring quest, head to either Ironforge or Orgrimmar (depending on your faction).

  • In Ironforge, look for Talvash, a gnome in the northern corner of the Mystic Ward.
  • In Orgrimmar, look for Nog g, in the middle of the Valley of Honor.

Talk to these NPCs to get the final part of the quest chain, in which they offer to restore the ring to full strength. Talvash's final quest is Gnome Improvement for Alliance, and Nogg's is called Nogg's Ring Redo for Horde.

Step Three: Get A Moss Agate & Silver Bar & Turn Them Into Nogg or Talvash

Both Gnome Improvement and Nogg's Ring Redo quests ask players to collect the same items: one Moss Agate and one Silver Bar, in addition to the Brilliant Gold Ring received from the Sparklematic 5200. You can go out and mine these yourself, or buy them for relatively cheap on the AH. Once acquired, turn them in to receive either Talvash's Brilliant Gold Ring, or Nogg's Brilliant Gold Ring.

Both of these rings have the exact same stats – a simple +16 to Stamina. In PvP, especially the meat grinder that is the STV Blood Moon event, having more HP is crucial for surviving any decent amount of time. There are better rings out there for pure DPS players with boosts to more damage-oriented stats. But for PvP, and even for Tanking, the Grime Encrusted Ring quest reward is a pretty solid pre-BiS option.
