Of the many things that were added or changed in WoW Classic with the Season of Discovery, one of the strangest and most surprising must surely be the Frozen Murlocs. These strange new NPCs can be found in both Elwynn Forest and Tirisfal Glades, but their purpose remained a mystery for the first few days of the season.

WoW Season of Discovery: How To Get Metamorphosis (Warlock Rune)

The Metamorphosis Rune is the Rune that enables Warlocks to Tank in SoD, but getting it can be a bit of a tedious process.

As it turns out, the Frozen Murlocs are tied to Warlock and Mage Runes, the Chaos Bolt and Burnout Runes, respectively. This guide explains where to find the Frozen Murlocs in both zones, as well as what to do to unfreeze them and unlock their Runes. Spoiler Alert: you'll need a group with other Warlocks or Mages to attempt to unfreeze the Frozen Murloc.

Where Is The Frozen Murloc In WoW SoD?

World of Warcraft Season of Discovery Frozen Murloc Location SoD

Frozen Murlocs in SoD can be found in two places: Elwynn Forest, and Tirisfal Glades.

  • Alliance players can head to the Eastvale Logging Camp and go directly north to find a Frozen Murloc. This one is found beyond the Murloc settlement on the river, on the island filled with Defias Rogue Wizards.
  • Horde players should head to Tirisfal Glades, to the northern coastline of Brightwater Lake just east of Brill. The Frozen Murloc will be on the northern shoreline itself, not on the Island in the middle of Brightwater Lake.

Because Night Elves and Tauren cannot be Mages or Warlocks, it actually doesn't end up mattering that the Frozen Murlocs can only be found far from their starting zones. Orcs and Trolls can take a Zeppelin to Tirisfal Glades, while Gnomes and Dwarves can take the Deeprun Tram to Elwynn Forest.

How To Melt The Frozen Murloc (& Rune Rewards)

World of Warcraft Season of Discovery Frozen Murloc Mage Warlock

Put simply, to melt the Frozen Murloc and earn its Runes, it needs to receive five stacks of Fire damage within 1.5 seconds. This is normally impossible for a single player to accomplish, even for two or three players. Bring a full group of five Warlocks or Mages – or a mix – to easily get over this hurdle. If everyone casts their spell at the same time, it will fulfill the requirements with practically no effort.

A group with at least three Warlocks can get this done, too, thanks to Imps. Imps can add a stack of Fire damage each, so if each Warlock has an imp, that's two Fire spells for each of the three players at the same time. Just be sure to time your Imp's Firebolt and your own Fire spell at the same time.

No matter which way you choose to approach the Frozen Murloc puzzle, once melted, it will reward Warlocks and Mages a new SoD Rune.

  • For Warlocks, this is the Chaos Bolt Rune, an especially powerful one if it can be acquired early.
  • For Mages, this is Burnout, which amplifies a Fire Mage's DPS output considerably.
