The best way to find Obsidium is to be a Miner of a certain level, so visit the local Mining trainer and earn Illustrious Grand Master, which is the maximum skill level in Cataclysm. For those who have some to spare, it's not soulbound, so it's possible to stack it in the guild bank or sell it in the Auction House.
Why Is Obsidium Useful In Cataclysm Classic?
A Max-Level Crafting Item
- Essential for high-leveling crafting for three professions
Along with two other important materials (Elementium and Pyrite), Obsidium was one of the additional crafting materials added in Cataclysm for levels 425 and higher. Blacksmiths and Jewelcrafters use it the most, and it's an important component in several Engineering schematics.
Players who are Miners can refine the ore they retrieve into Obsidium Bars, an ability related to the Smelting skill. It's the basis of several other more complex recipes once in this refined state.
Blacksmithing
Most of the Illustrious Grand Master Blacksmithing recipes require either Obsidium Bars or Folded Obsidium. These items are some of the most useful for both leveling and endgame content.
- Folded Obsidium. A crafting item, it's one of the first things a Blacksmith can make at level 425. It's a required ingredient in several recipes level 450 and higher.
- The Hardened Obsidium Set. Includes a belt, bracers, gauntlets, boots, shoulders, helm, leg guards, breastplate, and shield. The first piece is available at level 450.
- Obsidium Skeleton Key. Unlocks anything that would normally require level 425 Lockpicking or higher.
Engineering
- A Handful Of Obsidium Bolts. Engineers need reliable bolts for their creations in Cataclysm. Virtually every schematic in the level 425 to 475 range requires either Obsidum Bolts or Obsidium Bars.
Jewelcrafting
- The Prospecting Skill. Unique to Jewelcrafting, this allows the player to "sift" through a stack of five ores and recover gemstones. The downside is that this destroys the ore, and it can't be refined — but on the other hand, most of the high-level Jewelcrafting recipes use Eternium Bars instead of Obsidum Bars.

Where To Find Obsidium In Cataclysm Classic
Located In Virtually Every New Cata Zone
- Deepholme, Mount Hyjal, and Vash'jir are the best places to farm Obsidium
Only Miners with a skill level of 425 and higher, also known as Illustrious Grand Masters, can mine Obsidium Deposits. They can also be found in Uldum and the Twilight Highlands, but these areas are for higher-level characters.
- Mount Hyjal. This is the first zone most players visit at level 80, which also makes it a convenient place to start farming Obsidium. Follow the rocky, mountainous border to find nodes of ore, and if the player is patient enough to do a full circle, it might have respawned by the time they come back.
- Vash'jir. Less traffic and competition thanks to this zone being an underwater level, but make sure to acquire an Abyssal Seahorse first. Kelp'thar Forest and the Shimmering Expanse are the best places to start.
- Deepholme. Naturally, the underground zone would be a place rich in all kinds of resources, and there's plenty of every kind to be found all over this zone. Elemental enemies in this area, who are often stone-based, will even drop it occasionally.
