Chasing memories may seem like a fool's errand, but for those who grew up playing World of Warcraft on the family computer each night, it’s a dream. When World of Warcraft Classic came around in 2018, players flocked back to the game to relive the faint memories of their first steps in Azeroth. Unfortunately, many faced a harsh reality — World of Warcraft Classic wasn't the game it used to be. That's not to say the game itself was any different, because it was largely the same. What changed was how people played it.

The evolution of MMORPGs has drastically altered the play style of the genre. When MMOs like Everquest and World of Warcraft dropped at the turn of the millennium, people were excited by simply exploring their vast and undiscovered open-game worlds with the friends they made along the way. Now, in the modern MMO landscape, it seems people only care about the end game. But that's not what MMOs are about, and it's certainly not what made World of Warcraft so special back in its heyday. Fortunately, with Classic Hardcore, the journey is back on the docket, and it's a lot more Vanilla than Classic ever was.

Fans lost their minds when Blizzard announced it would be releasing World of Warcraft Classic back in 2017. One year later at its release, servers struggled to hold their digital doors open, with some managing massive queues of over 20,000. When people eventually got in, or changed servers altogether, they raced to be WoW Classic's first level 60, optimizing their leveling for speed and ease while erasing any sort of difficulty that presented itself. Everyone was excited to trek through the Eastern Kingdom and Kalimdor once again, though it was clear that most of their excitement was reserved for the last leg of the game in legendary dungeons like Naxxramas and Molten Core.

Players seemingly forgot why they fell in love with the beloved MMORPG in the first place, and that was for the mysterious and large world that they slowly ventured into and learned about as they fought their way to the end. Of course, they're not to blame. World of Warcraft was one of the original MMORPGs that defined the genre, and when the game first came out in 2004, people hardly knew what it meant to optimize a build, and every corner of the world was a mystery to be solved. It's not like that anymore. Every aspect of an MMO is heavily documented, sometimes well before a game's release, and there is a mass of guides and videos to hold players' hands every step of the way.

While the rush to 60 still exists in Classic Hardcore — the world's first level 60 in WoW Classic Hardcore was claimed only four days after the servers opened — many others are thankfully enjoying it for what it is: a taste of the Vanilla World of Warcraft experience. Having only one life to spare has changed the entire trajectory of Classic in Classic Hardcore, forcing players to carefully devise new approaches and explore new perspectives to achieve the things they have done hundreds of times before. That's because before, players could just live anew with help from the Spirit Healer. Now, that's off the table, and it's a stark reminder that the game that once wrought players' hearts can be hard, especially when clinging to a single life.

World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore is a Walk Down Memory Lane

The difficulty of World of Warcraft Classic is what made it so memorable. Back in the day, leveling was core the experience, and it wasn't easy. Every level, talent point, and gear upgrade mattered immensely. When players achieved any upgrade, they were sprinkled with bits of dopamine and survivability to keep them marching forward to Blackrock Mountain and the Plaguelands. That was amplified by the world's mysteries that could only be solved through investigation and curiosity. Azeroth is as well documented as the real world now, but with the introduction of Classic Hardcore, players are forced to find new and unique ways to play through the lands they know in hopes of surviving against World of Warcraft Classic's most deadly enemies.

No one can talk about World of Warcraft Classic without mentioning community. Working together with others to achieve greatness in World of Warcraft was never more important as it was in the game's early days. The sense of community in World of Warcraft Classic was strong, but it quickly dwindled. With Classic Hardcore, that sense of community has returned, and stronger than before. There are endless parties of players teaming up for even the smallest tasks, joining forces to push one another toward another level.

The incentive to stay alive is tenfold, and players work together to ensure everyone lives. This also means that low-level content is back on the table: World of Warcraft quests that were once skipped are being completed again, people are in trade chat trying to sell low-level gear that was once vendored, and people are stopping to smell the Peacebloom as opposed to forging a path of fire in hopes of reaching the end.

Nostalgia runs deep for World of Warcraft players, and especially for those in the Classic community. Many say the original Vanilla experience of 2004 through 2006 can't be rekindled, and they're right; memories burn brighter in the mind. But with Classic Hardcore, people are forced to go back to the game's roots to survive the arduous journey to level 60 in WoW Classic with only a single life to live. While this may only resurrect a part of the game's originality, it's still enough to rekindle a bit of what once was. Classic Hardcore is everyone's last chance to get a glimpse of what Vanilla really was, so fans should enjoy it while it lasts.

World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore is available now for PC.
