Warning: Spoilers for World of Warcraft: The War Within max-level campaign below.
After his apparent demise at the beginning of The War Within, World of Warcraft has revealed that Khadgar was able to survive his encounter with Xal’atath. Though he did not emerge from the encounter unscathed, it seems like Khadgar’s time in World of Warcraft is not over yet.
Recently, World of Warcraft added the final max-level The War Within campaign chapter to the game. Beyond experiencing the story itself, completing the finale also finishes the achievement World of Warcraft players need to unlock the Earthen – the new allied race in The War Within.
World of Warcraft: The War Within’s Intro Quest Shows How History Repeats Itself
The War Within expansion has just dropped, and the opening scene reminds players of another event in World of Warcraft's history.
However, during the final cinematic of the story chapter, the truth behind Khadgar’s apparent death has been revealed. After hearing Khadgar's guiding voice, Alleria confronts Xal’atath as she is using the Dark Heart to absorb the shadowy energies of Beledar, the massive crystal that creates the dynamic environmental effects in Hallowfall in WoW: The War Within. With a well-placed arrow, Alleria strikes the artifact, disrupting her efforts, and miraculously releasing Khadgar from within the Dark Heart itself. He nearly dies from the trauma, but Anduin is finally able to call upon the Light and save Khadgar from the brink.
Khadgar Lives in World of Warcraft: The War Within
In the following narration, it is revealed that Khadgar avoided certain death during the destruction of Dalaran in World of Warcraft: The War Within by transmuting himself into energy, which was absorbed into the Dark Heart. Doing so allowed him to survive, but left him with a lingering injury – Khadgar is now paraplegic, bound to a magical wheelchair.
Interestingly enough, Khadgar isn’t the only character who comes back from the grave during this questline. Queen Neferess – the mother of Ansurek, the first raid boss of WoW: The War Within – appears as well. Though she was thought to be dead, Ansurek actually turned her mother into an Ascended monstrosity, whom the heroes confront and incapacitate, possibly opening up a future where she can be healed.
This campaign finale is one of the last parts of the story players will get for the time being. The base campaign is now over, but fans can expect an epilogue to become available on September 10 once the Nerub-ar Palace raid opens in WoW: The War Within, likely pertaining to the death of Ansurek and the aftermath for the rest of the Nerubians. After that, players will have to wait until Patch 10.0.5 for the next chapter of the Worldsoul Saga.
