Summary
- A datamined file in Cataclysm Classic hints at player housing features for World of Warcraft's Midnight expansion.
- The file contains details on customization options for houses, including different sizes and decorations.
- The information found could be outdated or a red herring, but fans hope it'll mirror housing systems in other games.
World of Warcraft fans recently datamined a new file that seemingly contains some interesting clues about some of the features coming in player housing – but strangely, the information was found in Cataclysm Classic. While this file could ultimately be outdated or obsolete, it could also be the closest look World of Warcraft fans have gotten at player housing since it was announced.
During the first Warcraft Direct presentation in November 2024, World of Warcraft revealed that player housing was finally coming to the game in Midnight. While little information has been made available, World of Warcraft confirmed a few details, including that it would be an evergreen system divorced from player power.
World of Warcraft Patch 11.1 Adds 'Preview' of Player Housing
World of Warcraft adds a fun 'teaser' for player housing in Patch 11.1 that can hopefully tide them over until the full feature arrives in Midnight.
However, fans might have just found some major clues as to how the system will work, albeit in a rather unconventional place. While datamining the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic Public Test Realm, Wowhead found a file called PlayerHousingConstantsDocumentation.lua. This robust document contains an abundance of options that imply fans will be able to enter a customization mode to place both interior and exterior decorations of different sizes and themes, including floor, wall, ceiling, and tabletop varieties. Houses seemingly come in small, medium, and large sizes, and contain customizable walls, floors, ceilings, and even stairs and pillars – all features many gamers would hope for in a player housing system.
Player Housing Clues in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic PTR
The strange thing about this particular revelation is that the.lua file was found in the PTR for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic for the Hour of Twilight update, rather than modern WoW. This could have been Blizzard’s attempt to hide the file in a place where fans would be less likely to look, or it was left there on accident. That said, while there has been no evidence to suggest it, this could technically mean World of Warcraft could be planning to bring player housing to Classic as well, though that currently seems extremely unlikely.
It is important to note that this new file could amount to absolutely nothing; it is as likely to be an actual development file as it is obsolete junk – or even a red herring left to throw off dataminers. Even so, the features teased by this.lua file are promising, and give fans hope that World of Warcraft’s player housing will take pages out of Final Fantasy 14, Wildstar, and Guild Wars 2.
Fans won’t have to wait too long to find out how much of this datamined file proves to be real. According to the updated World of Warcraft roadmap for 2025, the Midnight expansion reveal will happen this summer, with player housing itself possibly arriving before the end of the year.
