Summary

  • The completion of Tyr's questline in Patch 10.2 suggests that Paladins will play a significant role in the upcoming Worldsoul Saga in World of Warcraft.
  • Legion, considered one of the best expansions, had a strong narrative and focused on class identity, providing significant lore development for every class, including Death Knights.
  • Tyr's Guard, the faction connected to Protection Paladins and their Artifact Weapon, may become the main Paladin faction moving forward, possibly opening up new race combinations for Paladins in the future.

World of Warcraft is slowly setting the stage for the Worldsoul Saga, and completing Tyr's questline seems to confirm what the future has in store for the Paladins of Azeroth. Despite largely focusing on the Dragon Isles, there has been no shortage of Legion references in Dragonflight's story, while characters such as Ebonhorn and Odyn had roles to play once again. Widely considered to be one of the best World of Warcraft expansions, Legion is fondly remembered for its strong narrative and focus on class identity. From Order Halls to Artifact Weapons, every single class in Legion received significant lore development, where Death Knights in particular were given a memorable questline.

Though Dragonflight primarily gave the new Evokers a chance to shine, Tyr has always had a strong connection with Paladins, and the questline to revive him has finally reached its conclusion in Patch 10.2. Following the events of the latest World of Warcraft megadungeon in Patch 10.1.5, the reformed Tyr's Hand joined forces with Chromie and Eternus to recover the disc containing Tyr's memories, during which several popular Legion characters made cameo appearances.

With Tyr brought back to life and Fyrakk defeated in Amirdrassil, players were under the impression that the questline was concluded, as it finally awarded them the Silver Scales dragonriding customization option (which was initially bugged at launch). However, a datamined Tyr's Guard tabard made some fans believe that the story wasn't over just yet. This belief led Portergauge to discover a new quest on the PTR servers that not only awards the missing tabard reward but also has some interesting story implications for Paladins in World of Warcraft.

Slight spoilers for the epilogue of Tyr's Questline ahead.

World of Warcraft Could Be Setting Up New Race Combinations for Paladins

Initially used as a narrative tool to connect Protection Paladins with the Silver Hand, their Artifact Weapon in Legion, it would appear that Tyr's Guard is being set up to be the main Paladin faction going forward. While the announcement of World of Warcraft: The War Within did not necessarily show any new class combinations beyond the new Earthen Allied Race, Tyr's Guard could serve as a strong foundation to seamlessly introduce Night Elf and Kul'Tiran Paladins further down the line.

Given how much the lore of Azeroth has evolved since its humble beginnings in 1994, many World of Warcraft players believe that it may be time to finally open up the once faction-exclusive classes of Paladin and Shaman to more races. Though Tyr himself may not have played a major role in Dragonflight itself, his revival will most likely bear consequences in The Last Titan, the final chapter of the Worldsoul Saga announced at BlizzCon 2023.
