The Nightmarish Emerald Drake, a mount never seen in World of Warcraft before, was recently spotted in the Wrath of the Lich King Classic Public Test Realm. The new mount was removed from the game shortly after it was discovered, leading many World of Warcraft players to speculate on what it will be for.
The Public Test Realm is the World of Warcraft client where players can provide feedback for coming content. Right now, the PTR for Wrath of the Lich King Classic is testing Patch 3.4.3 in preparation for the upcoming Fall of the Lich King update.
While poking around the Wrath of the Lich King Classic PTR, some players discovered a new mount in their journals they had never seen before. The Nightmarish Emerald Drake is a green dragon featuring a dark red texture and glow unlike any other mount players have been able to collect in Classic or retail WoW. However, not long after it was discovered, this mysterious new mount was removed from the World of Warcraft PTR server.
The Nightmarish Emerald Drake did not have a source for how it would be obtained while it was on the PTR. Some players theorize that it could be a 6 or 12-month subscription reward for World of Warcraft. Wrath of the Lich King Classic previously offered the Festering Emerald Drake, another new corrupted green dragon mount, through such a promotion, so it would not be a stretch for it to appear there. Either way, it seems World of Warcraft is not ready to reveal what this mount is for just yet.
Many fans were intrigued to see this new Emerald Dream-themed World of Warcraft mount appear in game. Dragons corrupted by the Emerald Nightmare are enemies players have faced since Vanilla WoW, so many players would be eager to get their hands on such a mount. These fans hope the mount returns to the game soon so they can collect it.
That said, some players are disappointed this mount is seemingly only available in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. These fans think making Classic-only rewards is counter-intuitive, and believe anything they can get in the throwback WoW servers, they should be able to obtain in retail as well. Luckily, there is precedent for rewards like the new Arfus pet to be obtainable on both versions of World of Warcraft, so hopefully Blizzard will eventually add means to acquire these unique collectibles in the modern servers some day.
World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
