As of right now, it appears World of Warcraft: Midnight will be launching with 19 Housing decor items in the cash shop. With over 2,200 decor items coming with the launch of the highly anticipated system in World of Warcraft, less than 1% of all Housing decorations will cost fans real money to collect.
Recently, World of Warcraft revealed Hearthsteel, a new premium digital currency that will be used exclusively to purchase Housing decor items from the cash shop. Hearthsteel sparked no small amount of concern from the playerbase, who feared it could mean an otherwise exciting system would be marred by microtransactions.

Luckily, information from the World of Warcraft: Midnight alpha can help to assuage some of these fears. There are currently only 19 Housing decorations that are flagged as cash shop items, 15 of which are visible in the alpha build dashboard. These decorations are brand-new items that are seemingly inspired by cherry blossoms and garden gnomes, as well as a charming Alliance-themed lion plushie and a Horde-themed wolf.
As of the most recent test builds for the World of Warcraft Housing system, there were 2,208 pieces of decor in the game, meaning just under 1% of collectible cosmetics for this feature cost real money. While that number could increase, World of Warcraft’s blog post on Hearthsteel said the vast majority would remain earnable in-game. What’s more, it also confirmed iconic items related to in-game cultures, characters, and encounters would not hit the cash shop, which will instead consist of brand-new items not directly related to the lore.
As Hearthsteel can be purchased with a player's Battle.net balance, these items can technically be obtained with in-game gold via WoW Tokens, albeit at a high cost.
It is possible World of Warcraft could add more cash shop Housing decor before Midnight releases, but the numbers at launch will probably look relatively close to what has already been revealed. The developers will undoubtedly continue adding more Housing items to both the game and the cash shop in the future, so players will have to wait and see how this percentage changes as more content is released.
Regardless, World of Warcraft fans won’t have to wait long to start enjoying the Housing feature. Early access starts December 2 for players who have pre-purchased Midnight, while the full system – ostensibly including the cash shop items – will arrive with the expansion itself, currently expected to launch in World of Warcraft on or around March 10.
