While cleaning out their childhood home, a World of Warcraft fan made a meaningful discovery from their younger years. The fan then posted their findings on social media, with fellow World of Warcraft fans commenting about their findings and reminiscing about their days in Azeroth with memories of their own.Though Blizzard's long-running MMORPG has seen plenty of changes over the years, the memories of many escapades remain strong in the hearts of World of Warcraft players. Between raiding cutting-edge content with their guild and goofing off in towns, the shared experiences of World of Warcraft players are innumerable, even as some of them have left the game. However, with new content arriving soon in Patch 10.0.5 in Dragonflight, and the impending return of the Ulduar raid in Wrath of the Lich King Classic, the community will have plenty to look forward to in the near term, no matter which time period in Azeroth they prefer. A Reddit user and content creator by the name of LambbChopss was cleaning her childhood home recently, and found a SteelSeries Zboard keyboard that she had used over 15 years ago to play World of Warcraft on. LambbChopss then posted her discovery on the r/wow subreddit and on Twitter. The SteelSeries Zboard was a membrane keyboard that had interchangeable and collectible faceplates, with LambbChopss' keyboard featuring some key art from The Burning Crusade. The right side of the Zboard replaced the traditional NumPad with buttons made for features specific to World of Warcraft, such as accessing different chats and action bar switching. The Zboard was sold by SteelSeries during the latter half of the 2000s, when both World of Warcraft and Windows XP were commonplace.
Though the Home button had fallen off of the right side, LambbChopss said she had not tested to see if her Zboard still worked. Nonetheless, her trip down memory lane received over 700 upvotes within a day on r/wow, and caught the attention of SteelSeries on Twitter. Though the Zboard has been retired for years, SteelSeries has gone on to make other devices such as the SteelSeries Apex 3 TKL keyboard. However, the peripheral maker acknowledged their history and remarked, "imagine an updated version" in a quote-tweet. Whether the Zboard will return in some capacity or not remains to be seen.
As Blizzard looks toward the future of the game in 2023 and beyond, the rich history of World of Warcraft remains a soft spot for players of all kinds. With tales from the past such as LambbChopss' own, the history of World of Warcraft goes beyond the game itself. Only time will tell how much of that history will continue to be dug up.
World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
