The popular World of Warcraft addon ElvUI is hitting the pause button on support once the Midnight expansion begins. The choice was announced during the ongoing World of Warcraft: Midnight alpha test, as the upcoming expansion will scale back API access and stop most of the game's addons from working as they currently do in The War Within.

Throughout World of Warcraft's two decades, addons have allowed players to customize the game's main interface to suit their needs. Over time, the usage of addons in World of Warcraft became mandatory for players to participate in high-end content such as Mythic+ dungeons and raids. Some of the game's most essential addons used during The War Within include WeakAuras, Deadly Boss Mods, and Details Damage Meter. The widespread use of addons in World of Warcraft has also proven challenging for Blizzard, as the developers have a history of designing boss encounters with addons in mind.

Although Midnight's rumored release date points to an early 2026 launch, the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion is already giving addon developers cause for concern. On Twitter, addon developer Luckyone stated that ElvUI, a popular replacement for the game's built-in user interface, would be 'on hold' for Midnight. ElvUI's stoppage is due to the changes that Blizzard has made to World of Warcraft's API access in the Midnight alpha client, limiting the information that addons can access. Some of Blizzard's changes include limitations on how the user interface can be altered, which ElvUI and similar addons do, which means it will not work as intended once Midnight releases in 2026. Luckyone stated that ElvUI's development would only resume if Blizzard reverses course on its API limitations.

ElvUI joins WeakAuras in being a popular World of Warcraft addon that has paused support for Midnight. However, ElvUI will continue to work in The War Within and Mists of Pandaria Classic in its current state. While some addons will still be functional once World of Warcraft's next expansion goes live, Midnight's raid encounters will be designed with the intent that they can be cleared with little to no addon usage from players. As of this writing, Midnight is still in its alpha testing phase, so anything related to addons is still subject to change pending player feedback.

Along with the addon controversy, World of Warcraft: Midnigh t will also make significant class balance changes across the board. It remains to be seen what Blizzard's response to ElvUI's decision to pause support will be.
