Summary
- Despite being important characters in the recent World of Warcraft expansion, Merithra and Ebyssian were left out of a meme featuring famous dragons from the game's history.
- Fans were perplexed by the omission, especially considering that minor characters and those that have been dead for years were included instead.
- Speculation suggests that the exclusion may be a result of the original plans for the characters, as other promotional materials and lore books don't give them the same prominence.
World of Warcraft recently shared a meme featuring many famous dragons from the game’s history, but fans noticed Merithra and Ebyssian were not among them. Despite being the new leaders of their respective dragonflights, and having just received new models, these two important World of Warcraft characters are absent from the image.
At the beginning of Dragonflight, the Green and Black Dragonflights did not have Aspects in charge of them. Each of these factions’ stories in the expansion revolved around this fact, and the ascensions of Merithra and Ebyssian, children of their flights’ former Aspects, were major plot points, with both characters even receiving new models in the most recent World of Warcraft patch.
World of Warcraft: How the Aspects Reclaimed Their Power In Dragonflight
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight's Dragon Aspects have finally been restored to their former glory as Azeroth's dedicated guardians.
However, that didn’t stop these dragons from being left out of a recent meme shared on the official World of Warcraft Twitter. The image asks fans to pick their favorite dragon, and then lists a dozen different options. While all the other current and former Aspects are shown, Merithra and Ebyssian are not among them. Even so, dragons like former Black Aspect candidate Wrathion, Galakrond – who has never been seen alive in World of Warcraft – and Sapphiron, a raid boss from 15 years ago, made the list instead, perplexing many players.

Obviously, there is no way World of Warcraft could have included every major dragon in this image, as there are far too many to count. That said, given Ebyssian and Merithra's relevance to the story of Dragonflight, many fans found it peculiar for them to have been excluded from the meme, especially with comparatively minor characters, or others that have been dead for years, being given spots instead.
Merithra and Ebyssian weren’t the only dragons missing from the list. In the comments of the Twitter post, fans pointed out that Iridikron and Fyrakk, both of whom quickly became fan-favorites during Dragonflight, and Senegos, who received a heartfelt sendoff in a recent World of Warcraft patch, were popular characters that didn’t make the cut either.
Some fans have speculated that these exemptions are the symptom of something larger. Evidence suggests World of Warcraft may not have originally planned to make Merithra and Ebyssian the Aspects. The Dragonflight loading screen, as well as the physical collector’s edition pins, feature Ysera and Wrathion instead, and The Dragonflight Codex – a new World of Warcraft lore book players aren't happy with – mentions Ebyssian after both of his brothers, and doesn’t even mention Merithra is the Aspect. Regardless of the real reason, most agree it is odd to have left these major characters from the meme.
