World of Warcraft is adding a new Snail Racing mini-game in Patch 10.1, Embers of Neltharion. This hilarious, not-so-fast-paced activity gives World of Warcraft players a fun way to earn new rewards while getting a few laughs.
Embers of Neltharion is adding an expansive subterranean zone called Zaralek Cavern to World of Warcraft. This new area is home to several native species, including the new Niffen Renown faction and the bulky Drogbar first introduced in the Legion expansion.
Like those from the Broken Isles, the Drogbar of Zaralek Cavern in Dragonflight have an affinity for snail racing–but this time, players can participate. A special weekly quest allows players to pick one of four snails–Brulee, Tricky, Bashful, and Roggy–to support during the race. They can give their chosen snail a boost with treats, fend off attackers who try to waylay the racer as they speed along the track, and guide their champion to victory. Completing the event rewards them with a unique battle pet of the winning snail, the other three of which can be earned in subsequent weeks.
There is also a Drogbar NPC named Briggul who is linked with a new reputation faction called Glimmerogg Racer. The faction has five ranks which are gained through earning reputation via daily quests, and by showing him unique level 25 snail battle pets earned from other places in the game. It is possible he might grant reputation for slug pets, though players don’t know this for sure yet.
At least one additional reward is tied to the Glimmerogg Racer reputation: Big Slick. This bright pink snail mount can be earned by completing the Snailed It quest. This mount is used in some of the Glimmerogg Racer daily quests, where they must make deliveries to other locations across the massive Zaralek Cavern zone in Dragonflight, though hilariously, its movement speed is no faster than normal walking speed.
That said, it seems like players may be able to increase the mount’s speed by raising their reputation and performing certain tasks. There is also evidence players can race their own snail battle pets, and train their own snails to become full-fledged racers–activities that interviews from World of Warcraft developers have corroborated. Unfortunately, none of these activities appear to be on the release candidate build of the Public Test Realm. This could mean these activities won’t be released in Patch 10.1, or that World of Warcraft is keeping them secret. Either way, players will find out for sure once the patch releases on May 2.
