World of Warcraft is adding its own spin on the Duty Support system from Final Fantasy 14. This new feature coming in the next World of Warcraft patch will allow players to complete certain dungeons with NPC companions.
Patch 10.2, Guardians of the Dream, only recently went live. However, World of Warcraft has already teased three more patches coming in Dragonflight before The War Within. The first of these content updates is called Seeds of Renewal, and it will introduce new gameplay content, customizations, and Dragonriding across old World of Warcraft zones.
World of Warcraft: The War Within Will Remove One Big Feature from Dragonriding
World of Warcraft: The War Within plans to remove a core feature from Dragonriding, but doing so will actually make things easier for players.
However, one of the most exciting new features coming in this update is called Dragonflight Follower Dungeons. According to the World of Warcraft blog introducing Seeds of Renewal, players can “Tank, heal, and DPS alongside follower NPC companions that join you on your Dungeon adventures. They will be available in all eight Normal Dragonflight Dungeons and can scale from 1–4 players. These companions will allow players to learn about Dragonflight dungeons at their own pace and provide the freedom to experiment and customize their Party makeup.” Fans familiar with Final Fantasy 14 couldn’t help but notice this new feature sounded strikingly similar to the Duty Support system.

The Duty Support system is a relatively new feature in Final Fantasy 14. Originally introduced in Shadowbringers as the Trust system, this feature allows players to venture into dungeons that are required to complete in the Main Scenario with a team of NPCs, most of whom are important story characters. Over the course of the post-Endwalker patches, Final Fantasy 14 expanded the Duty Support system to include every story dungeon from A Realm Reborn through Stormblood as well, enabling players to tackle the entire Main Scenario almost completely solo.
It remains to be seen how exactly the Follower Dungeons will work in World of Warcraft. In Seeds of Renewal, it seems these companions will only be available for Normal Dragonflight dungeons, but players can use them even with a partial group of real players, allowing for greater versatility and shorter queue times. Players can expect to learn more about this system when it comes to the Public Test Realm.
Many fans are excited to see how World of Warcraft implements the Follower Dungeon system. Duty Support in Final Fantasy 14 has been a game-changer for many players and allowed fans to grow even closer to beloved NPCs. Many hope World of Warcraft iterates on the Follower Dungeon system further, possibly even requiring some lore-heavy dungeons to be completed in the main story to provide further context. If they eventually add the functionality, players would love the chance to bring iconic World of Warcraft characters–or perhaps their own alts via the new Warbands system in The War Within–into dungeons in the future as well. While the feature has only just been introduced, it already seems to have endless possibilities in World of Warcraft.
