Summary
- World of Warcraft Patch 10.2.5 adds Dragonriding to the rest of the game, but the top speed in old world zones is limited to 80% of the normal maximum.
- The limitation on Dragonriding speed outside the Dragon Isles is to prevent travel from being trivialized in smaller old world zones.
- Dragonriding in the Dragon Isles can reach 830% ground running speed, while in the old world it is limited to about 660%, still more than twice as fast as normal flying speeds.
World of Warcraft is adding Dragonriding to the rest of the game, but top speed in old world locations will be limited to 80% of the normal maximum. Though slightly slower than they are used to, this new form of flying is coming as a part of the next World of Warcraft content update, Patch 10.2.5.
Recently, World of Warcraft announced some big changes coming to Dragonriding in the near future. The first of these changes is coming in World of Warcraft Patch 10.2.5, Seeds of Renewal, which adds this flying style to the rest of the world.
That said, there is one limitation World of Warcraft players should be aware of before the patch comes out. According to the WoW Patch 10.2.5 PTR notes, Dragonriding outside the Dragon Isles is limited to 80% of its normal speed limit. This has been done primarily to avoid trivializing travel, as old world zones tend to be smaller than those on the Dragon Isles. While this might seem like a significant nerf, players such as boskee who have tested old world Dragonriding on the PTR can barely tell the difference.
How Fast is Dragonriding in World of Warcraft?
- Dragonriding in the Dragon Isles can reach 830% ground running speed.
- In the old world, Dragonriding speed is limited to 80% of this speed, so about 660% at maximum (the same as the Dracthyr’s Soar ability in old world zones since Dragonflight launch).
- Normal flying speeds cap out at 310%, meaning the limited old world speed is still more than twice as fast.
Seeds of Renewal is also removing a limitation on the Dracthyr’s version of Dragonriding in World of Warcraft. Right now, Soar has a long cooldown that can be reduced through certain means, but with a limited number of abilities it can use during each flight. In Seeds of Renewal, Dracthyr will be able to access the full Dragonriding system using Soar, with its cooldown almost completely removed.
World of Warcraft players can look forward to more things for Dragonriding on the horizon. The War Within transforms Dragonriding into Dynamic Flying, with tons of old flying mounts being enabled for the new flight system. Players will be able to toggle between both types of flying easily, and will have all the World of Warcraft: Dragonflight glyphs and traits unlocked automatically. Traversing Azeroth will soon be faster and more fun than ever before.
