Summary
- The War Within expansion raises max level to 80, though it is also disabling the ability for level 70 characters to halt experience gain.
- Players suspect Blizzard disabled level 70 experience blocking to prevent over-gearing and scaling issues with some of the new content.
- However, characters below level 69 can still halt XP progression at their current level by visiting either Behsten in Stormwind or Slahtz in Orgrimmar.
As all World of Warcraft players can discover the lands of Khaz Algar in the recently released The War Within expansion, Blizzard removed the ability for players to stop the progression of their characters at level 70. The War Within is the tenth expansion for World of Warcraft, bringing various new content to Blizzard’s popular MMORPG and raising the maximum level for characters to 80 instead of 70.
The War Within officially launched on August 26, with players who purchased the Epic Edition able to enjoy this new World of Warcraft expansion a few days early on August 22. The War Within brings players to the depths of Azeroth, in the subterranean realm of Khaz Algar. This expansion comes with new hero talents for every class and specialization, an additional allied race called Earthen, an account-wide progression system, a new endgame PvE challenge called Delves, as well as four new zones to discover in World of Warcraft: The War Within.
World of Warcraft Fans Discover Easter Egg in The War Within Opening Scenario
The opening scenario for World of Warcraft: The War Within has an Easter egg players might remember from Wrath of the Lich King and Legion.
As The War Within raised the maximum level for characters to 80, Blizzard disabled the feature for level 70 heroes to stop their experience gain and remain at that specific level. Characters below level 69 can still use this feature to stop their progression at their current level by visiting either Behsten in Stormwind or Slahtz in Orgrimmar to turn off experience gain. Blizzard confirmed that in World of Warcraft Classic, players could not disable experience gains, while in Cataclysm Classic only characters level 59 and below can use this feature.
Why World of Warcraft Level 70 Characters Can't Block Experience Gains
While Blizzard didn’t give any official explanation for this decision, players suspect the company decided to prevent players from staying at level 70 as the current scaling makes over-geared level 70 characters more powerful than low-geared level 80 heroes. This limitation stops players from abusing this scaling issue as they explore the new dungeons and bosses introduced in The War Within. World of Warcraft regularly faces scaling issues upon expansion launch as the new content isn’t adapted to over-geared characters, but made so that everyone reaching the minimum level required can enjoy this new content without needing endgame gear from the previous expansion.
World of Warcraft is giving players more endgame options with the release of The War Within. Those who want to explore the new content on their own rather than with other players now have options to experience endgame content alone, without needing a group. The story mode does not require teaming up with others to defeat bosses, and the Delves offer a new solo-friendly PvE content that scales in difficulty and offers good gear rewards.
