Blizzard is revamping the PvP ranking system in World of Warcraft Classic by making several adjustments, including the removal of rank points. World of Warcraft Classic PvP has featured coveted rewards like the Grand Marshal title and unique mounts, but it's about to undergo its biggest change since release.
Like many other MMOs, PvP has been a main focus for some World of Warcraft fans since the Blizzard game was originally released back in 2004. Although PvP has been less prioritized in favor of PvE content in the modern World of Warcraft, the Dragonflight version of the game has a strong PvP community, as do the different Classic clients of the MMO. The old World of Warcraft Classic PvP system locked a lot of players out simply based on how much time needed to be invested, but these changes may intrigue some fans that may have dismissed arenas and battlegrounds in the past.
Blizzard confirmed several changes coming to the World of Warcraft Classic PvP system in a recent blue post that compared the old way to the new method. World of Warcraft Classic Ranking Points will no longer exist, with a heavy emphasis on contribution points instead. Contribution points are calculated during weekly server maintenance, and they will be used to gauge a player's seasonal PvP standing moving forward. Similar to the old method, these Contribution Points can decay if a World of Warcraft Classic player becomes inactive, but they won't tick down indefinitely as Blizzard has set a baseline number for each rank, with demotions only resulting from dishonorable kills.
Honor milestones are the primary focus of the new World of Warcraft Classic PvP ranking system, requiring players hit a certain threshold of honorable kills to rank up. Honorable and dishonorable kills have always played a role in World of Warcraft Classic PvP ranking, but Blizzard is attempting to reduce how many hours of "high levels of play" gamers are required to invest to upgrade their status. The new World of Warcraft Classic PvP method focuses less on the rivalry or boosting that a player may have with others in their faction and places the emphasis back on Alliance versus Horde.
Because there are many World of Warcraft players that have already grinded through the Classic PvP system, the changes may appeal more to casual fans that still collect honorable kills. Although the adjustments have already been added to a World of Warcraft public test realm, it's currently unclear when the new system will replace the old one on live servers.
World of Warcraft Classic is available now for Mac and PC.
