A World of Warcraft fan just discovered the interface window for the Group Finder in the Classic Era Season of Discovery servers. While the feature doesn’t actually do anything, the fact it can be opened in the retro World of Warcraft servers in the first place could mean something big for the future of Classic WoW.

Recently, World of Warcraft launched the Season of Discovery, its most ambitious twist on the Classic WoW formula yet. Players can discover brand-new quests, engrave powerful Runes that unlock abilities and roles never seen in World of Warcraft before, and challenge a 10-man raid version of the iconic Blackfathom Deeps dungeon. However, the Group Finder feature that enables players to seek out party members and randomly match for dungeons is not available in the game.

World of Warcraft Classic Update Makes Fan Favorite Change

World of Warcraft Classic swiftly makes an amazing change to one Warlock Rune in the Season of Discovery in response to fan backlash.

That said, it seems some fragment of the Group Finder still exists within World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery. WoW fan and content creator MrGM recently discovered the window for the Group Finder could be pulled up on World of Warcraft Classic Era servers by running the custom script “/run PVEFrame_ShowFrame()” in the chat window. The Group Finder window does not work, so it is most likely leftover code–but it could mean World of Warcraft is considering implementing the feature in some fashion in the future of WoW Classic Season of Discovery.

The History of the Group Finder in World of Warcraft

The Group Finder tool was not added to World of Warcraft until 2009, about halfway through the original run of Wrath of the Lich King. In modern WoW, the Group Finder–and especially the Dungeon Finder subfeature–is an invaluable quality-of-life feature for the community and is a staple tool for social interaction within the game. On the contrary, the Group Finder only recently came to Wrath of the Lich King Classic to much dispute, and it is still unavailable on Classic Era and Hardcore servers, which seek to preserve the original WoW experience in their own ways.

In all likelihood, MrGM’s discovery of the Group Finder window in WoW Classic was a meaningless fluke, especially considering how divisive the subject is. Though many players would love having the modern social tool on the Classic Era servers, just as many would be vocal against its inclusion. Even so, the fact the Group Finder window can be pulled up in World of Warcraft Classic at all is a noteworthy discovery–even if it is nothing more than an entertaining scrap that slipped out from behind the WoW Classic development curtain.
