Summary

  • World of Warcraft may bring back exclusive items like the Reins of the Kor'kron War Wolf through the Trading Post, setting a new precedent.
  • The possibility of obtaining rare items like Ahead of the Curve achievement mounts after their exclusivity closes could benefit new and returning players.
  • The idea of making items less exclusive is supported by a majority of players, but a vocal minority sees it as diminishing the prestige of these items.

World of Warcraft may be bringing back exclusive items like the Reins of the Kor’kron War Wolf via the Trading Post. If it does, World of Warcraft would set a new precedent by allowing rare items like Ahead of the Curve achievement mounts to be obtained after their windows of exclusivity close.

Certain items in World of Warcraft are locked behind difficult challenges and achievements, such as Ahead of the Curve – the seasonal Feat of Strength awarded for clearing a Heroic raid while it is current endgame content. These achievements often reward incredible mounts, such as the Reins of the Kor’kron War Wolf, obtained from the Siege of Orgrimmar raid at the end of Mists of Pandaria.

However, evidence suggests this prestigious mount may be returning to the game in another fashion. On a recent build of the World of Warcraft Public Test Realm, the Reins of the Kor’kron War Wolf received a Trader’s Tender cost. The currency for the new Trading Post feature, Trader’s Tender costs are usually only added to items that appear in the monthly catalog. The War Wolf has an exorbitant cost of 7,899, which is almost certainly a placeholder, but the fact it is there at all suggests it may be obtainable again for the first time in nearly 10 years through the Trading Post.

WoW content creator MrGM also discovered that the Ichabod pet also got a placeholder Trader’s Tender cost in the same patch. Unlike the Kor’kron War Wolf, this scarecrow was obtainable in late 2022, earned by gifting two subscriptions via the Support a Streamer program World of Warcraft ran on Twitch. This could mean Ichabod might return via the Trading Post in the future as well.

AotC Mounts on the World of Warcraft Trading Post

If these items appear on the Trading Post, World of Warcraft will be setting a huge precedent. Players have never had the chance to earn Ahead of the Curve mounts after their raid cycles in the past, and changing that paradigm could be promising for new and returning fans who missed them. The fact Ichabod could get the same treatment suggests players might have second chances to earn other exclusives and promotional World of Warcraft items too.

Needless to say, the World of Warcraft community is divided on this idea. The majority of players seem to think making items less exclusive is a good thing, especially for unobtainable World of Warcraft mounts that are nearly a decade old. However, a vocal minority who see these items as marks of prestige believe re-adding them removes the merit they represented in the first place. Regardless, until World of Warcraft reveals its plans with these items, fans can’t know for sure how or if they will actually be re-added in the first place.
