World of Tanks is getting its biggest update yet on September 3, Wargaming revealed at Gamescom 2025. The free-to-play game has received a steady stream of updates since it first came out in 2011, but its developer says none of those compare to what's next for it. When World of Tanks Update 2.0 drops later this year, it could be a big moment for the title.
The past year has been an unusual one for World of Tanks. While the game has enjoyed continued success in many regions, the Russian government sought to take control of Lesta Studio, which maintains the MMO's live services in Russia and Belarus, accusing the company of ties to "extremist activities." Now it looks like the game could reach new heights in the back half of the year, with the massive 2.0 update coming in just a couple of weeks.

World of Tanks 2.0 Update Goes Live on September 3
During Gamescom 2025, Wargaming revealed the trailer for the upcoming 2.0 update, which the studio calls "the most significant update" in the game's history. When it drops on September 3, the update will bring the much-requested Tier XI tanks, rebalanced mechanics, new missions, and even a new map. Even before the 2.0 version, World of Tanks was already one of the best games with tank combat, but Wargaming hopes it will "elevate gameplay across the board."
Each of the new Tier XI vehicles features a unique mechanic, such as increased firepower or greater mobility. They'll also vary in how players can use them, with some being passive traits and others being active skills that users can activate at a given time. There will be 16 of these tanks in total, with all classes getting at least one. Those who prefer World of Tanks' best heavy vehicles are in for a particular treat, though, as the class is getting seven Tier XI tanks, more than any other group.
Wargaming has also rebalanced almost the game's entire vehicle roster. Changes include more hit points for researchable light tanks and buffs for "under-performing" Tier X tanks. Version 2.0 will also introduce matchmaking improvements. Similar changes have been common across the industry lately, with Battlefield 6 changing its approach to matchmaking and games like Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals updating their own systems. How these adjustments impact the player experience has yet to be seen, but fans won't need long to find out. Most users will get the 2.0 update on September 3, with those in the Asia-Pacific region getting it early on September 1.
