Wordle is a popular puzzle word game that people all over the English-speaking world have been playing. After it exploded on social media early this year, it seems like everyone had some of those green and yellow squares popping up on their feeds. But if anyone out there still hasn't played this game, here is a breakdown of the rules of the game.

As a quick note: there are many popular Wordle clones out there, but the original is on the New York Times Games website. All answers, clues, and rules in this article will be about that version.

In order to play, head to the New York Times Games Wordle website. Choose a starting five-letter word that is a real English word. Words are almost always the American versions of words, and they can contain duplicated letters. Type the chosen starting word into the website and press enter. The letters will change color in order to give the player some clues to the answer.

Green letters are correct and in the right place in the word.
Yellow letters are correct but in the wrong place in the word.
Gray letters are incorrect and won't appear at the answer.

Players have five more tries to get to the answer before they lose. Puzzles reset at 12:00 AM local time daily. This means there is only one puzzle per day, which is part of the reason why there are so many Wordle copycats and clones out there for players to get more word guessing in their day.
