Despite a handful of reported setbacks, insiders are claiming that development of Marvel’s Wolverine is still going smoothly. Insomniac had already earned high praise among comic book fans for Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales by the time it announced a Wolverine video game set in the same universe during a PlayStation Showcase way back in 2021. From there, tiny morsels of information about Marvel’s Wolverine started to surface over the past couple of years, particularly that Spec Ops: The Line writer Walt D. Williams is on board to craft a darker, more mature story than Insomniac’s past Marvel offerings.
However, just as Logan’s life is fraught with turmoil and danger, the development of Marvel’s Wolverine has reportedly run into issues over the past year or so. Not the least of these was Insomniac’s massive data breach last winter, which resulted in a large amount of Wolverine information being leaked to the public. More recently, former Marvel’s Wolverine director Brian Horton announced that he was leaving the project to work on Xbox’s Perfect Dark, just a few months after the game’s art director departed to pursue other projects.
This latest upheaval, combined with the overall lack of official updates since the game’s initial announcement, has led some to believe that Marvel’s Wolverine is falling into a troubled development cycle. However, industry insider Jeff Grubb says that fans shouldn’t worry just yet. In the latest episode of “Jeff Grubb’s Game Mess” on YouTube, Grubb and fellow insider Mike Minotti noted that Wolverine is still fairly far in development, with Grubb believing that Insomniac’s track record with superhero games is a promising sign that Wolverine will meet fan expectations when it does launch on the PlayStation 5.
Insider Says Marvel’s Wolverine Will Be Shown Soon
Grubb also stated that he thinks Sony will show off more of Marvel’s Wolverine soon, and this matches some previous rumors. Back in October, another insider claimed that Wolverine could be shown at some point before the end of the year, with the most likely venue being The Game Awards 2024 on December 12. As for when fans might get to finally play Marvel’s Wolverine, sources believe that the game could launch as early as 2025, making it a possible competitor for Skydance's Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
There is still a lot up in the air about Marvel’s Wolverine, especially after last year’s major leaks and the recent departure of key figures like Brian Horton. Earlier this year, Insomniac assured concerned fans that it would show more of Marvel’s Wolverine when the time is right, and advised everyone to be patient for new developments surrounding Marvel’s favorite Canadian mutant berserker.
