A credible insider has revealed an encouraging update for Insomniac's upcoming Wolverine game. With mounting rumors of a new trailer for Wolverine slated to release in the coming weeks, fans of PlayStation's high-caliber first-party games may well be in for a treat.

Insomniac Won't Yet Commit to Wolverine PS5 Release Date

Wolverine was first announced at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase by way of a CGI trailer, with the game pegged to be in early development for PS5. Insomniac Games then went radio silent about the game's development, but a devastating cyberattack on the studio in late 2023 leaked lots of details surrounding Wolverine, including a planned 2026 release window and even an incomplete alpha build. This bred concerns of Wolverine potentially being delayed further or perhaps canceled, but Insomniac allayed fans by confirming soon after the breach that development would progress as intended, though a release window was still not announced.

If superhero fans are lucky, Sony's next rumored showcase could potentially have more than one Insomniac-developed Marvel game again.

Wolverine PS5 Playtesters Reportedly Think the Game Looks "Fantastic"

Cut to over a year and a half later, and there are murmurings of Wolverine finally making a resurgence. Notable industry insider Tom Henderson recently claimed that Insomniac plans to showcase a brand-new Wolverine trailer at the rumored PlayStation State of Play at the end of September 2025, which incited quite a bit of excitement among fans who've waited years for an official update on the game. In the latest episode of the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Henderson alleged that he's spoken about Wolverine with a "few playtesters," and "they think the game looks fantastic."

This is obviously a positive update, as it implies that Wolverine has been shaping up well behind the scenes despite boatloads of sensitive info about the game leaking to the public, which must've shaken morale among Insomniac developers. Henderson also doubled down on his prior reporting of a new Wolverine trailer at the September 2025 State of Play, revealing that the info came from a source whom he's known for years and has given him "the most reliable information" surrounding PlayStation's internal affairs. However, Henderson did add that there is a chance the new Wolverine trailer "might not be" at the State of Play, in which case the 2025 Game Awards ceremony in December is the likeliest candidate.

From a few playtesters I've been speaking to, they think [Wolverine] looks fantastic. So that's good news, and fingers crossed we get to see a release date in a couple of weeks' time.

It seems more plausible than ever that Insomniac fans will finally get a new look at Wolverine after almost four years of waiting, but there's also the question of when the game will launch. Whenever a PlayStation first-party game is shown off at a State of Play, it's almost always a year in advance of release, as proven by Ghost of Yotei, Saros, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. If Insomniac is indeed ready with Wolverine's second trailer, it could be a sign that the game will join the 2026 PlayStation first-party lineup, perhaps as the heavy hitter for next fall.
