Summary
- Geralt will be part of The Witcher 4, according to his voice actor, Doug Cockle.
- Even so, Cockle said that Geralt won't be the upcoming game's protagonist.
- The Witcher 4 director Sebastian Kalemba has already hinted at Geralt's return back in December 2023.
The Witcher 4 will feature Geralt of Rivia, according to one of the voice actors that has long been involved in CD Projekt Red's hit franchise. Be that as it may, the fan-favorite character may not get a lot of screen time in the upcoming The Witcher game.
CDPR originally confirmed that The Witcher 4 was in development back in early 2022. The company has so far revealed that the game, code-named Project Polaris, will be powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 5 and mark the beginning of a new The Witcher trilogy, with the implication being that Geralt will no longer be the main character.
Geralt Is Apparently Returning in Witcher 4
Nevertheless, the fan-favorite monster hunter will apparently return in Project Polaris. That's according to Geralt's voice actor Doug Cockle, who said as much in a recent video posted by YouTube channel Fall Damage. Around the 7:20 mark, Cockle remarks that he "cannot say anything about" the fourth The Witcher game, but then immediately proceeds to state that his character will be featured in it. "What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don't know how much, and the game won't focus on Geralt," the actor said.
Cockle's comment was given in a matter-of-fact tone, as if the actor believed Geralt's involvement in the game has already been officially confirmed by CD Projekt Red. But that is not exactly the case; prior to this development, the closest thing to confirmation that fans had received was when The Witcher 4 director Sebastian Kalemba teased a possible return of Geralt in a December 2023 interview with Italian publication Lega Nerd. On that occasion, the CDPR official described Project Polaris as an "excellent entry point" for the series newcomers that will still cater to long-standing fans wishing to follow "Geralt's adventures."
What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don't know how much, and the game won't focus on Geralt.
Geralt's Voice Actor Still Hasn't Seen The Witcher 4 Script, Maybe
Although Cockle appears to be convinced that his character will return in The Witcher 4, he says that he still hasn't seen the game's script. At the same time, the actor acknowledged that he wouldn't be able to talk about it even if he did. "I could be lying through my teeth [about not seeing the script]," he explained playfully.
CDPR recently confirmed that Project Polaris started active development in 2024, with over half of its staffers already working on it as of late 2023. Seeing how the bulk of voice recording work is usually done during the middle stretch of typical AAA game development cycle, the studio presumably hasn't started Project Polaris voice recording sessions just yet. That, of course, doesn't mean that some of the actors attached to the project haven't already seen (portions of) the game's script. Either way, Geralt's apparent return suggests that The Witcher 4 may not make a large time jump from The Wild Hunt.
