One unfortunate player's quest for some DLC armor in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt recently met a premature end after Geralt portaled himself to a hilarious death. The footage of the incident subsequently made the rounds on social media, emerging online just a few months after another viral clip showed one Witcher 3 player suffer a tragic defeat at the very end of the Dettlaff boss fight.

Warning! Minor gameplay spoilers for one The Witcher 3 side quest ahead. While Geralt's hatred of portals spawned many hilarious The Witcher 3 memes over the years, most fans of CD Projekt Red's hit 2015 RPG don't share his animosity toward these magical gateways. One exception to that state of affairs is the portal mechanism in the old signal tower south of Kaer Morhen, which hides the diagram for a fan-favorite armor set. This location contains an environmental puzzle requiring players to activate two magical crystals by hitting them with Aard. Trying to use the portal without fulfilling that prerequisite will see Geralt plummet to his death off the side of a cliff.

Yet even doing the puzzle correctly doesn't guarantee a successful outcome, which Reddit user Rustytip recently found out the hard way. The player recently shared a gameplay clip of Geralt portaling himself to a hilarious death despite stabilizing the gateway mechanism just moments prior. While the footage doesn't show the player activating both crystals, the fact that the portal stops flickering as soon as they hit the nearby gem indicates that they already powered the other one. Yet Rustytip's Geralt still ended up plunging to his death, with the player describing this The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt incident as the moment they "understood why Geralt hates portals."

This is far from the first bug that players encountered while looking for The Witcher 3 Wolf School gear, which was originally released as free DLC in June 2015. According to widespread online reports, installing the DLC after already having started the game is a reliable way to get locked out of the armor diagram due to a bugged chest that can't be opened in order to progress the quest. Additionally, the same course of action can prevent the second crystal near the ledge of the lookout tower from spawning, with some players also reporting that the first gem sometimes doesn't respond to Aard.

The issue reportedly affects all non-GOTY versions of the game that aren't pre-bundled with the DLC. And while CDPR is still releasing updates and hotfixes for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this particular bug has never been addressed by the developer.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
