Summary
- The Witcher 3 has sold over 60 million copies, nearing Skyrim's sales figures.
- CD Projekt Red is currently celebrating the game's 10th anniversary.
- The Witcher 4 is currently in development, as is The Elder Scrolls 6.
CD Projekt Red has revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has surpassed 60 million copies sold, and this figure indicates that the RPG is close to overtaking Bethesda's 2011 title, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. A decade after the game's initial release, The Witcher 3 continues to see impressive daily player counts, and with the recent release of an official modding tool, many former fans have been returning to the title in droves.
While the game has become regarded as one of the best of all time and received countless awards, the success of The Witcher 3 wasn't a guarantee. In March, CD Projekt Red CEOs Michal Nowakowski and Adam Badowski shared more about the lead-up to the game's development in an interview, reminiscing about their chaotic workplace and how they had to sleep under their desks while developing the first Witcher title. Slowly but steadily, the developers made a name for themselves, with the third title proving to be the magic bullet. Now, it looks like The Witcher 3 is gaining on another of the most beloved role-playing titles in gaming history when it comes to overall sales.
The Witcher 3: Why You Should Restart in 2025
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has continued to be a standard for RPGs, and the 10-year anniversary is the perfect time to revisit.
As announced by CD Projekt Red in its latest financial report (and reported by IGN), The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold 60 million copies over its 10-year lifespan. Notably, Bethesda announced that Skyrim had sold over 60 million copies in June 2023, meaning that the gap between the two games is quickly closing. In 2025, The Witcher 3 is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a concert tour set to visit multiple countries, and while no additional details have been revealed, CD Projekt Red recently posted to Twitter claiming that it wants to "celebrate together" with fans.
The Witcher 3 Reaches 60 Million Copies Sold a Decade After Launch
As The Witcher 3 continues to celebrate incredible success, the developers are looking to the future of the franchise. The next title is currently in development, with multiple developers expressing confidence in The Witcher 4's gameplay and choice of protagonist, with Ciri stepping into the spotlight this time around. While no release window for the game has been revealed, CDPR has stated that the fourth installment won't be ready until at least 2027.
In the meantime, Skyrim fans are quickly approaching fifteen years of waiting for the next entry in the Elder Scrolls series. The Elder Scrolls 6 remains largely a mystery, with fans only having a 2018 teaser trailer to go on. While morale in the community is low, many fans have been enjoying returning to Cyrodiil in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered as they wait for more news. Some are hoping that a detail or two will be shared during the June 8 Xbox Games Showcase.
