There’s a new story mod for The Witcher 3 that allows players to take on the role of Ciri. Since its release in 2015, this well-received third installment of the cult RPG series has become a playground for modders of all kinds. Over the years, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has seen mods that allow players to change the appearance of characters, add new weapons to combat, and even restore cut content that didn't make it into the final version of the game.

Although it has been over 10 years since The Witcher 3 was launched, new content is still being added to it, both by players and developers. CD PROJEKT RED and Yigsoft have even released an official modding tool, The Witcher 3 REDkit, which gives fans access to the same tools that were used to create the base game. Players were given the opportunity to enhance their gaming experience, whether by creating new items, adding new structures to the environment, or deciding on the loot dropped by enemies. The tool also featured a quest editor, which could be used to make major changes to the game's story, such as adding new storylines, characters, and quests.

The Witcher 3 Mod Where You Play as Ciri

According to PCGamesN, fans of the series who want to play as Ciri don't have to wait for the release of The Witcher 4. This is possible thanks to the new story mode for The Witcher 3, titled Dawn over Kovir, which was created by a single developer, Alexander Fander-Maslov. The new mod is designed to be played after completing the main game, and its focus is on introducing Ciri as a Witcher. According to the creator himself, the mod was inspired by the cinematic reveal trailer of The Witcher 4, hence it is intended to serve as an introduction to the eagerly awaited next installment in the series.

The story presented in the mod refers to Ciri's characteristics as the protagonist shown in the reveal trailer, specifically her balancing act between compassion and fury. Players must navigate a mountainous region based on the Skellige Islands and transformed to fit the atmosphere of Kovir. According to Fander-Maslov, completing the mode takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. The creator also points out that the difficulty level, originally set to "Pain and Suffering," is best adjusted to players' own experience by enabling enemy level scaling.

The Dawn over Kovir mod is now available for fans of The Witcher 3 and it can be downloaded via Nexus Mods and requires Custom Player Characters and the Community Patch to be installed. The mod is also scheduled to receive an update before the end of 2026 and possibly a full voiceover. The emergence of another mod, preceded by information about a leaked expansion for The Witcher 3, seems to show that despite the passage of time, the game still arouses enormous interest in the gaming community. It also appears that players will not have to wait for the release of the fourth installment in the series to embark on new adventures in the universe of Geralt and Ciri.
